My phone says it's 28 degrees outside. Downstairs by the stove, it's 91 , upstairs, it's 81. I may have to open the back door (upstairs) for an hour , just so I can sleep.

Tomorrow and Friday, we are expecting seriously cold weather, they're saying Friday, with the windchill, we'll be looking at 20 below.
THIS IS MY WOODSTOVE! THERE ARE MANY LIKE IT , BUT THIS ONE IS MINE!

Oh man, I miss my wood stove. The ventless gas is not even close to the same.

We are getting down to freezing this week. Cleaned out the chimney on Monday. Firing up the Buck Stove tomorrow night.

8.4 F outside, 78 F inside.
New Englander pellet stove. A 40lb bag lasts about 20 hours on medium, which is what it is set on now.

Today's high temp is projected to be 14 with a low of -2 and Friday will be 16 with a low of 3.
Time to pull out some oak for the long nights, and instead of two boxes of wood coming in
a day it will go to four. Well line heat trace tape was plugged in yesterday and kitchen cabinet doors
along the outside wall will be opened at night as I have water lines inside.

I've been looking into putting in a woodstove downstairs, it's got a nice big brick pad in front of the existing fireplace, but apparently the damn thing needs a chimney liner, and the opening where the existing damper is is way too small and will have to be opened up too. Sure would be nice, though.

Meanwhile I can't get the Buck stove insert to light up. Wants to smoke out the entire house.

I know how to build a fire in a fireplace, or outdoors, but damn this thing is frustrating.

Got it working last year and it was great once it was going, but still a bitch to get started.

It's a Buck 21 from what I can find. Are they always this temperamental?

Burn a few pieces of loosely wadded up newspaper that burns hot and quick to get the draft going. Then transition to small kindling wood to keep it hot, then bigger pieces.

It's all about getting draft on these cold days.

Open a window or door an inch or so to help the stove draft when you start it. Does the stove have an Outdoor Air Kit (OAK)? If so, it might be worth putting one in assuming your stove will take one.

Make sure to use well seasoned wood. Well seasoned means a moisture level of 20% or less as measured on the face of a freshly split piece of wood. MM are about $20 from HD/Lowes. Well worth getting one, especially if you're starting out.

Would love to have one but both of my fireplaces are in the wall and the steel is rusted out. Was quoted $4300 for stainless liner and a lopi insert. $4300 pays for a lot of electricity.

I have a Sears wood stove on a rock floor in the corner with 2 rock walls . It does a great job of making and retaining heat . It is probably pushing 76-78 in here and it is 31 outside . gotta add wood before I go to bed . I use a cast iron Hunter ceiling fan to move the air around . It is the only one that has lived and has an oil port

Surest way to get it going is to go big first. Take 10 or 12 sheets of newspaper, tear them in half, and ball the halves up and put them in the stove. Then take wood chips and little splintered pieces out of your wood bin or whatever and scatter them on top. Then pieces of bark and small pieces of wood a couple of inches wide and four or six inches long, a half-dozen or so of those. You can strip bark off the wood you're going to burn. Put those on top of the rest. Then a couple smallish sticks of wood, nothing thicker than your wrist. Make sure air can get thru the pile, then light it in multiple places starting in the back and working forward. Open the flue and crack the door on the stove about an inch. Let it get going and then feed in a little bigger wood, and don't close down the vents or the flue until it's really going well with full-size pieces of firewood burning. Don't let it go out again until you need to empty the ashes.

We have two and they are both cranking tonight. In the basement we have a Cawley Lemay 600 and upstairs we have a Jotul F55 Carabassett. It's 75 in the house and a balmy 3 degrees outside. I am burning a mix of two and three year old Red Oak.

It is going to get cold tomorrow. They are threatening -2 as a high and -21 as a low. Will start this to supplement the propane furnace.

Insulation goes in next Thursday...but I still fired this up while I worked inside. High of 23 today and it still took the chill off the house!!!

Not a stove but I have this. It won't completely heat the house at that temp, but it helps and the ambience is sure helps.
