Sorry . . . never again.

The media is just pissed that they don't have a grieving Mother to plaster all over the news.
They are masturbating to the thought of a tear jerker story with pictures for their Holiday edition.
Ghoulish fuckers.

Sooo. A santa who didn't bring the story to them or any news outlet and refused give up the names of the family or nurse still refuses to do so? What has changed since the beginning when they first ran with it.

Are the just pissed that they can't get the scoop of sticking cameras in grieving family members faces?

Santa told them in the beginning he wasn't going to give names. The healthcare workers couldn't even if they wanted to . The News Sentinel is gonna get some of the additional publicity they were wanting just not the positive way they were wanting.

I missed the story the first time around. They published something without checking it out, then contacted the man involved who said "None of your business" so they publish a second story that seems to imply the man is lying? Shitty journalism. They never should have reported it the first time, then when they could never have verified if it was true or not they should have dropped it.

The second story is nothing more than an attempt to smoke out the Mother or nurse.
They're hoping she'll come out in defense of "Santa" so they can exploit the whole thing for profit.

This is really sickening.  From a place that has had so much hope over the past few weeks when families have been devastated, the local media has done a good job.  This just completely took all that goodwill and flushed it down the toilet.

Barring that I have a SMLE with a nice Sanderson bayonet..

Two things attributed to the child caused me to question the account.

When the boy said, "They say I'm going to die" and "How will I know when I get to where I'm going?.   Neither sounded to me like they would come from the mouth of a five year old.

I chalked it up to Santa paraphrasing and gave him the benefit of the doubt.

I wish nobody would come forward.  This man has had his life turned upside-down, his integrity all but destroyed, only because he refuses to tell the media who the family is so they can further be exploited.

If that was my child that passed away, Santa protecting my privacy would be de facto protecting the news vultures lives.
There's no telling what i'd do if one of those scumbags stuck a microphone and a camera in my face while I was burying my child over the Holidays.
The one thing I can guarantee is, it wouldn't be the story they thought they were going to get.

On Free Beer and Hot Wings morning show today, a guy called in, said his sister in laws Dad is the Santa in question and the story is legit. I had no reason after hearing him to think it's fake. Guy kept the kid/family confidential out of respect. Good on em.

Did you happen to "hear" that by reading the OP's link?  I agree with the poster above that this is an attempt by the News Sentinel to smoke the parents/nurse out to defend the Santa.  Guy didn't go looking for them to report it so I don't see why he'd make it up after they came to him.  He seems like a great person to me.

"Therefore, because the story does not meet the newspaper’s standards of verification, we are no longer standing by the veracity of Schmitt-Matzen’s account."  It is literally in the link, word for word.  As to why he would make it up, I can't answer that question.  I suspect that it would be the same reason that non-veterans dress up as Army Ranger Special Forces to the mall, why Brian Williams made up his stories.  Who knows.  I am way too cynical to believe everything I read.  But it could be true.  I don't begrudge journalists for attempting to verify the stories that they push.

After the election press coverage nightmare debacle, their version of the truth is probably the polar opposite of whatever it they report.

"Untrustworthy" is the word we are all looking for regarding the press/MSM.

I was just being a smartass.  You said "I hear that the original paper that published the story no longer stands by it." and the thread is titled "....media is trying to poke holes ..." and OP linked to a story written by the editor and author of the original story where they are saying they are no longer standing by it.

And if the family does blast the media for being cocksuckers you'll never read a word of it in the paper and it'll never make the evening news.
maybe, just maybe it'll get a little airtime if the family somehow gets a Youtube or Facebook video to go viral.

The media shapes the narrative as much by omission as they do by reporting.

Looks like Santa was telling the truth all along.  How shocking that the corrupt media is corrupt.

WBIR 10News has independently verified several critical details of this story, but has agreed not to publish those for the sake of privacy. Schmitt-Matzen maintains his desire to protect all names involved.

Santa is a good guy:

If the family wants to come out and say who they were, I'll stand beside them. I'll support them in any way I can, but the way my life's been upset in the last three days, four days, don't do it. You have enough problems. Your family will be tore apart more than it is now," he said. "But, from a selfish point of view, they'd be coming to my rescue. But who needs rescue here? Me or them?"

Yeah.

They get hits and attention from a feel good story and then they get more hits and attention from trying to destroy the guy.

Eitherway, the paper gets paid. And that's all that matters to them.
