I just picked up the special edition three disc set the other day, and there is an audio commentary track on there by MSgt Eversman, Col. Van Arsdale, Col. Matthews and Col McKnight. What a phenomenal insight into the "real deal" of what went on. They are very clear about how the dramatization for the movie differs in some respects from actual events on the ground in Mogadishu. They also bring up some events peripheral to the fight that aren't otherwise mentioned in the book or movie. Col. Van Arsdale states that MSgt Gordon and SFC Shugart were not on a suicide mission when they requested to be inserted at the Super 64 crash site. They were operating under the idea that more troops would be inserted eventually, but they couldn't stand by and watch the downed crew be massacred by the horde without doing something, no matter what the odds were at the time. They also mention that MGen Garrison never once came on the radio during the entire operation. He let his men do their jobs and didn't micromanage.
It's really a great tribute to the men of Task Force Ranger and I highly recommend it.
