I've been drooling over an M14 since I was old enough to know what it was, grew up watching Vietnam war movies, along with pretty much every other conflict we've been involved in.

Love history and most of my collection reflects this. Mauser, Garand, Enfield, M16A1 clone, M16A2 clone, etc, etc. But somehow I always pass over the M1A, it always seems to be a few guns down on the list, but never moves up as I buy things.

I don't own a 308 but I do have about 300 rounds of 7.62 NATO stashed, do I need to pick up an M1A and drop it in a USGI stock?

Why Yes, yes you do. No man can properly call himself a man without and M14 clone or variant in his collection.

Yes. Do it now. I waited 20 years and finally got one a couple months ago. I should have done it 20 years ago; they aren't getting any cheaper.

I'm going to be needing some details on how you mounted that can and how she runs.

As someone who just recently bought an MP5K clone...

BUY THE MP5. I've always wanted one, and its even more awesome than I had imagined. I should have done it much sooner.

I saw a beat up M1 for $1750 today.

It was a Winchester, but it was also beat up.

I need another safe for my ammo.

Those commie ammo crates take up a lot of space and I can't bring myself to ditch the crate.

Bought a 9222 Loaded that was a trade in about 15 years ago.  The guy that bought it new was handicapped and after one trip to the range he realized he needed a smaller and lighter rifle. He traded it in on an AR and I bought it the day after.
I think I have taken it shooting 5 or 6 times, but no way in hell would I sell it.

DO IT

No you don't, for nostalgic reasons maybe. Otherwise you'll chase accuracy and spend stupid money. Get a garand and call it good.

Like a boat it'll become a money pit.

Sorry IMHO.

KY Gun always has a few on the shelves, plus there's those Italian jobs too. Buds had an early one some months ago.

If it will hit an 18 inch plate at 500 I'm more than happy with that accuracy and I already have a Garand.

I don't plan on putting in a chassis and buying a $2000 optic, so I don't see how it would become a money pit .

The collector in me said yes. The purist said rebuild it with 100% USGI parts. The realist said you spent the money and time and have a solid clone. Do it.

I had one.   Didn't care for it.  The 20 rnd mags worked great.  I wanted to kill a deer with it...  Of course I could never get it to feed from the 10 and 5 rnd mags...  The mags were noisy.   The rifle was just damned long.   Didn't fit the need I had. Couldn't scope it without a custom mount...  Was a SA with the fucking out of spec receiver.   Sold it.  Sold my other 308 too.

It was a gorgeous rifle though.   Might consider a scout one day.

Had a springfield 9222 model for the last 13 years until about six months ago. Looked/felt awesome. Just didnt find it very different from a garand. Sold it to a buddy, he'a thrilled with it but I dont miss it at all.

Garand is actually better balanced and "feels" better.  Same sights, same ergonomics.

And a .308 Garand is the best-handling semi-auto rifle imaginable.

The M1A sucks, almost as overrated as the Garand.

As a surrogate for the historically significant M-14, sure.

On its own merits, it falls short of other legacy platforms and even further from modern platforms.
