My IR laser is much more 'high speed.'  It has a fast-forward button...

Laser. The guys can see it with their NV gear as they can't use traditional sights because of the bulk of the gear. Also, you can't see it with the naked eye- which gives an even more destinct advantage to our guys at night over there.

Thats not a scope, its a scent amplifier.  Used in only Muslum countries.  It allows you to smell your enemy hiding behind walls and through doors.

In all seriousness, the kid seems to be a hard core gear geek (believe me, I am not suggesting that is a bad thing, as it describes myself as well) - he likely bought it himself before deploying.

He also has what looks like a non-issue tac sling and some sort of motocross gloves on. I'm not sure what the deal is with the handguards, though - any former or current M203 gunners care to chime in?

Good eye for the handguards. I was one of the last cycles at Ft. Benning to qualify on the M203 and wear the bolo badge I was a grenader 1st class. Check:

www.fas.org/man/dod-01/sys/land/m203.html

The original M203 had a one piece handguard. If I remember correctly, you had to take the barrel assembly off to get it off the weapon. Apparently in order to mount anything to the upper half, it's been modified to accept an standard A2 style handguard.

Those are Mechanix Wear gloves in a black, brown and tan camo pattern. I use them at work and for wrenching on the 88 Jeep. I just cant allow myself to wear them during a day of shooting. I need to be taken seriously! Whats up with the duct tape in strange places? And no that isn't a personal question directed at any of you! When you are in the middle of Iraqi hell, everything you touch is bound to roast yer digits. I'd keep them covered! NASCAR pit crews will second that!

Here is what I see:

M203
PEQ-2
Which necessitates the use of a "normal" handguard instead of the M203 handguard, to mount the PEQ-2 using the barrel mount

Cheesy aftermarket Wal-Mart or equivalent scope.

The problem is that with the elimination of the M203 hanguard, he got rid of his M203 leaf sight. When he mounted the Wal-mart special, he then eliminated his M203 quadrant sight. All of the other crap is nice, but he now has no way to accurately aim his M203.

Lose the scope, add a quadrant sight.

Is that laser for illuminating targets for laser-guided weapons?  Or a range finder?

Using NVGs makes the use of irons or other optics a bit tough, the IR laser can be used for aiming, and it isn't visible to those without NVGs.

Normally a laser is a pretty useless item on a rifle IMHO, but this is the exception.

Troy,

It looks like 20" to me instead of a carbine.  Does the standard M203 handguard allow the attachment of a PEQ-2 anywhere?  Perhaps that's
why he choose this setup.

Definitely a 20". Looks like some of the scopes from Cheaper Than Dirt. As for the laser, I don't think it will mount to the actual M203 handguard, hence the standard A2 upper half. I've seen many pics of Special Forces groups using only the upper with 14" barrels as well. They do make a "carbine" length M203 handguard. It's just more expensive and additional parts, why not stick with what you already have?
