Read "Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts" by Maxine Hong Kingston

It gives you a good idea of how women and females are thought of by traditional Chinese ideology.

Example: In turn of the century China many female infants were killed by suffocation in hot ashes immediatly at birth or they were drowned by pouring boiling water in their mouths.
