Yep, after 5 years of grad school, I had my dissertation defense today. Now that I have my Ph.D., I am qualified for the difficult work of Piling it Higher and Deeper. [;)]

Quoted: Well done! What field, and what was the dissertation on? View Quote Physics, and whatever the dissertations was on, it was probably nothing we could understand! My good friend is starting on the road for a Ph.D in physics, too. Starting post grad studies at Carnegie-Mellon. |

A PhD in physics??
You mean now you're an expert on laxatives?[;)] Just kidding! Congratulations! |

Quoted: Better get some collision insurance. View Quote Damn, you guys make worse physics jokes than physicists, and that's saying a lot! [;)] |

Oh ya, High Transverse Momentum Charged Kaon Production in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions.
One of my wife's and I favorite pillow talk topics. So, got a good job lined up? Can I borrow some money for this new AR-15 I got planned? |

One of my best buds from HS was/is studying Nuke & Computer Engineering at UMR. He was telling me once about getting to play with the research reactor they have on campus. I told him they ought to hook that biotch up to a steam turbine generator & actually accomplish something usefull. [;D] |

Hey are you the nerdy guy from Legally Blonde that has a PhD and can't get a date? j/k
Congratulations! Whatcha gonna do wit all dat der edumakashun? TT [wave] |

congrats. must feel great to finally have that thing in the bag.
i will defend in a few months. |

Quoted: Hey Doc, I have this rash from radiation..... View Quote Hey, now yer talkin. It is my expert medical advice to let the rash run its course. And, um, stay away from pregnant women and small children... |
|
... Congratulations dude! I had no idea you were that close to your Ph.D when we all went out for pizza a few weeks ago.
... Like I told you then, I've been fascinated with HEP all my adult life. I could talk about it for hours feeling like a kid would about Santa on Christmas eve. ... If there were one career path I would have chosen differently in life, it would have been in the research of smashing things into tiny pieces. Right on man! |

Quoted: congrats. must feel great to finally have that thing in the bag. i will defend in a few months. View Quote Actually, it hasn't really hit me yet. Maybe after bulletfest... Good luck on your defense!. Quoted: Hey are you the nerdy guy from Legally Blonde that has a PhD and can't get a date? j/k View Quote [>(] It's not funny, man! Nope, I've got a beautiful GF [sex] who must find me attractive in her own sick, twisted way. I will get pics of her on here some day. (And she will have good trigger discipline.) As for what's next: Probably a postdoctoral position at a national lab, doing pretty much the same thing I have been doing but getting paid better. Then maybe a faculty position at a university. That's the plan, at least, I have to get the postoc first! |

I hate physics, PIA courses--I don't know the problem was me or the professor. I didn't hate physics when I was in HS, but physics college courses? AAAHHHH. |
|
Impressive. My friends husband is a nuclear Physicist at JPL. Can't understand a word he says.

Congratulations!!!!!!
It's been my dream lately to get an advanced degree. So how long did your defense take? Was it like an oral board where they all asked challenging questions, maybe having done some research / already being familair with the topic? How many participated? |
|
Congrats doc. Now for the bad part, you have to start working for a living.
|
|
Before the degree is conferred, shouldn't you be required to spell it? [:)]
Congratulations on a terrific achievement. |

Congratulations.
Great feeling to be done, isn't it. Dr. AFARR |

How many participated? View Quote There were 6 people, including my advisor and a moderator, so 4 people were grilling me. They asked about my research and about general nuclear physics topics. They keep asking questions until you can't answer them, so everyone eventually feels dumb at their defense. [;)] Quoted: Congrats doc. Now for the bad part, you have to start working for a living. View Quote You mean it gets worse than the 50-60 hours a week I worked in grad school? Quoted: Dr. AFARR View Quote I think I will never cease to be amazed by the number of advanced degrees floating around this place. Congtatulations Fizassist. Now it's time to cash in on all the long hours and hard work. By the way, that aimpoint is holding up just fine. It really likes it's new home.

Congrats. We have a couple of positions out near Livermore you might be interested in. Just don't bring your ARs.

Outstanding - so keep us posted if the liberalism hits you all at once or just creeps up on you. I think most doctors and lawyers lean far left and wonder when it hits them. Be careful. |

Congratulations, and well done. As far as "High Transverse Momentum Charged Kaon Production in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions" goes, uh, I, uh, think I'll wait for the movie to come out. Or at least Books on Tape narrated by Stephen Hawking's computer. When I was in college I had a Major in Civil Engineering and a minor in my bedroom![naughty] (Sincere apologies to whomever I lifted that from here on ARFCOM.) |

Quoted: Congrats. We have a couple of positions out near Livermore you might be interested in. Just don't bring your ARs. View Quote That is a tough choice. I probably have an "in" at Berkeley if I wanted to go there, but I am pretty serious about moving to a gun friendly state. I have an interview at Los Alamos coming up, and I've had one at Yale. The laws in CT are ok, the ones in NM are great. My advisor can't understand why I won't go to Berkeley; it's his idea of Heaven. Quoted: keep us posted if the liberalism hits you all at once or just creeps up on you. View Quote Never! I thoroughly enjoy making people in my field feel uncomfortable with their liberalism (the icky, socialist kind, just so we're straight on definitions). I wear my "I'm not armed, please don't hurt me" shirts to the office pretty regularly. It's sad, some people here think the shirt means that I'm anti-gun, and they "agree" with me. With that kind of thinking, it's hard to even know where to start. [:(] |

nucular psychics? WTF?!
Ms. Cleo glows in the dark? congrats!!!! mike |

CONGRATULATIONS DOC!!!
Nice meeting you in NY a few weeks back. And remember, when you're at your first job and someone sends you down to the basement for a bucket of neutrinos... It's a joke. [:)] |
