Im looking at getting a new pistol. and im looking at getting another 1911 commander, or an XD-40 WITH 4" barrel.
primary duties of this pistol will be CCW and home defense.
anyone out there own both? if so which one do you prefer?
almost forgot, "both" isnt a choice.

I don't have an XD, but looked hard at 'em prior to picking up my 2nd G23.

I really can't say anything good or bad about the XD's due to not having fired one extensively, but with a good 1911 you just can't go wrong IMHO.

Given just those to choices I am going to vote XD.

Part of it depends on how you like to carry.  If you don't mind going cocked and locked with the 1911, then it is not a bad choice.  I like the fact that I do not need a strap on the XD to comfortably carry it chambered.

I know some 1911 purists are gonna go, "all you need is the thumb safety", and "The XD is just as bad only you can't see the hammer sticking up". However, it is just my preference because I have accidentally released the safety on my 1911 without noticing right away.

Also, someday people in the free world may be able to get 15rd mags for the XD.

Handle both, compare how they feel in your hands. Compare the sights and the trigger pull.

Then get the Commander.

oh 1911 all the way, Something about a bastardized wanna be glock just doesn't appeal to me.

plus commanders are sweet especially for carry.

They ARE apples and oranges...I have an HS-2000, 2 friends have the XD-40 based on shooting my HS.  They're great pistols, always go bang, and for the money, they're STILL a great value...Quantico Arms sells 'em for $389 at shows around here.

The 1911 is certainly a different animal...I don't own one, but I had a friend's for about a year, and shot it a lot.  The slide was kinda loose, and it shot about 10' to the left...no joke.  I've been after him for years to give me the damn thing to refurbish it, but he just won't do anything with it.

I'd go with the XD, based on ergonomics alone.  Small hands, the XD fits 'em better.  If you scope on HS2000 talk, someone there is selling a new guide rod that allows you to use any Wolff springs you want, so you can tailor the gun to your personal preference, load, etc.

Just my .02, take it for what it's worth.

LOL!!

I have the XD40 5 inch and I can not say enough nice things about that pistol.  It is so friggin' awesome.  I reluctantly traded my G22 for it but NO REGRETS!  It's awesome.

My recommendation - shoot them both and get the one you are most comfortable shooting.

Springfield Armory should've set up a deal with Glock such that the XD pistols would accept pre-ban Glock mags.  A bulky 10-shot 9mm makes no sense.

I have both and XD 40 and a 1911 full size. Both, I have used to qualify for my CCW.  I went on the hunch that the XD 40 would shoot better on my qualification.  I was wrong.  I scored higher on my 1911.  Not to disqualify the XD as a crappy gun. I'm still novice shooter.  I've shot JHP and Ball Ammo not one jam or hiccup. I've dropped it once muzzle hitting the ground first(on accident) and it still fires fine.  The guide rod and springs you can buy aftermarket sold through the HS200Talk forum is really a good deal, however, I don't see the need for it unless that's your thing.  Others handgun owners who've shot mine say they are pleased and they like em- and these are Glock owners.

The XD is heavy on the muzzle end, so to me, the recoil is not bad at all and reduces muzzle flip and it seems to go center right back on target acquisition.  To me the XD feels light because of the Polymer frame.  Ergomics wise, it feels comfortable in my hand and the trigger guard is just the right size.

Say what you want about the XD being a wannabe Glock.  I think a Steyr M40  would be more along the lines of that, especially when you read up on the history of it's development.

The XD is a good up and comer, thus it's hard to find decent holsters (I've seen specific ones made my Galco, which I have and 2 variations made by Fobus, which I also have).I've read nothing but good reviews in various magazines and online forums.  You really can't beat the bang for the buck factor.  In this case, cheap price does not mean cheap quality.

If you get an XD9 you can increase your ammo capacity by using the XD40 magazines.

There is so much written about the 1911 that I'm sure you already know the good and bad.

FWIW, I had the same dilemma, so I bought both. =)

Although, the new Glock 45 cartridge may sway me to pick up a Glock.

None of the above.  Get a Glock 30.  10 rounds of .45 acp, weights about 24 ozs empty, and its very conceable.  I love of mine.  Shoot one and you will to.

There are plenty of well made 1911's available from American companies using American employees and materials. The XD has none of these (except for being marketed by an american company).  This day in age (where jobs are flowing out of the country), I believe it is more patriotic to keep the business here.

I have a XD 9 and 1911, both are great. I am waiting on the XD 45 and I will be all over that thing. I have a friend that is a 1911 wiz, I think I will have him sup one up for me. Can you tell I love them both?

Must be a Springfield.  Have him sell the POS and get a REAL 1911.  I shoot clays at 10 yards with my Colt Commander.  And I DON'T aim 10 feet to the right.
