My nephew is in the Marines and was over in Iraq. Right now, he is in Kuwait and expects to be home next month.
He was engaged to a girl back home in South Carolina. The night before last she was murdered---they found her in her car, shot in the head, after she failed to show up at a friend's house.
My nephew can't be at the funeral, and I just can't imagine what he's going through sitting over there.
Me, I feel like shit and I hadn't even met the girl.

My sister, who had to break the news to him on a scratchy connection from 7,000 miles away, said that he is taking it very hard.

IIRC he or a family member needs to contact a Red Cross Rep and ask for an emergency leave, they should be able to get him back home fast. Sorry to hear this, so sad.

I don't know what your nephew's disposition is, but if he is like most Marines, I hope the cops figure out the case ASAP, or he'll have a definite desire to go "Punisher" on whoever he thinks did it.

I know I would. If someone shot my Morgan I can't say I wouldn't be on the 6 oclock news shortly thereafter.

Am-O-Tramp has a good suggestion. Unless his individual presence is critical to ops in the theater the Red Cross may be able to work an early homecoming.

Oh man, as if it isn't bad enough for him.
Catching the perps never brings a victim back, but it's the next best thing, I suppose.
I'm thinkin' it may be better if the cops got them before he does.

This is just one of those thing that you really don't know how to respond to.

I just hope they nail the SOB responcible and send him to the chair. He deserves worse.

I don't know. They found her car so whoever did it didn't steal her car. She wasn't carrying a lot of money or anything...don't know any more details really and neither does my sister.

I had something similar happen (though not as horrible as this) two weeks before I graduated boot camp, and I thank God that I had all my new Navy buddies around me 24-7. They were the best damn group of guys, they pulled me through it 'cuz I was a mess, and being alone at that point would have been very, very bad. It is small consolation, but outside of his real family, with his Marine brothers is the best place for him to be.

Again, I am so sorry to hear about this, and I hope the persons responsible ride the lightning.
