I've been noticing a few strange unit patches on some Army uniforms in pictures from Iraq. I'm curious as to what kind of percentage of actual "shoot 'em up" troops are Reserve/National Guard, i.e. infantry, MP's, armor, etc. Two Tennessee Guard MP units from 30 miles away are over there somewhere. I'm sure they're getting shot at as much as grunt units now that the "main assault" phase of the war is over.

Rikwriter, we all hope he's OK, too.
Abnak, plenty of RI NG's there too, MP units, Air Guard Security Forces, and others. Look at how small the military is now compared to even the first Gulf War. Klinton annihilated it. National Guard units are even more a part of our defense now than they have been in the last 75 years. Tim |

If the RPG shooter can see the infantry, then the infantry can see the RPG. Best tactic is to move constantly and keep the RPG guy moving too, and kill him before he has a chance to shoot. GunLvr |

One assumes that the picture is posed and that the photographer wouldnt haae been out in the open to take the picture if the infantry _needed_ that corner for cover.
Besides, is pointing the SAW away from the corner you're looking round a good plan? But enough nit-picking *salute* good for them, and thanks! /PHil |

However there are some Guard support units and some Reserve combat units. Last time I checked the Guard/Reserves made up 50% of the combat troops of the US Army. |

With a range around 300-500 meters. No chance they might miss seeing a raghead shooting from concealement until after there is a streak of smoke headed at them. Yes, its always better to see and shoot the other guy before he see's a shoots you, but why bet on it? Why not stay dispersed, so even if he gets off the first shot, it will not render you combat ineffective? |

They're in a town. 300 meters in a city is pretty rare unless it's from the roof of a building. To be honest, they are bunched up pretty badly. Still, we're armchair quarterbacking. I joined a LE MP guard unit after I got out of the Corps at the end of 92, figuring that would keep me from stupid deployments. I used the same POW/RAS thoughts you talked about.
I outsmarted myself. They found something for us to do for a year. |

I have several good friends from high school in that unit that I still hang out with. I was with them the night before leaving to the mideast and we were all joking about how they would probably end up guarding oil rigs in the middle of no where. I guess we were all wrong. God bless them.

Klinton cut them much more, and reduced their training budgets considerably. Tim |
