One of my best friends is with this unit.  Hope he's okay.

I've been noticing a few strange unit patches on some Army uniforms in pictures from Iraq. I'm curious as to what kind of percentage of actual "shoot 'em up" troops are Reserve/National Guard, i.e. infantry, MP's, armor, etc. Two Tennessee Guard MP units from 30 miles away are over there somewhere. I'm sure they're getting shot at as much as grunt units now that the "main assault" phase of the war is over.

Is this what passes for good tactics these days?

What do you suppose an RPG would do for this units ability to conduct its mission?

An RPG is a line of sight weapon.  If the RPG shooter can see the infantry, then the infantry can see the RPG.  Best tactic is to move constantly and keep the RPG guy moving too, and kill him before he has a chance to shoot.

One assumes that the picture is posed and that the photographer wouldnt haae been out in the open to take the picture if the infantry _needed_ that corner for cover.

Besides, is pointing the SAW away from the corner you're looking round a good plan?

But enough nit-picking *salute* good for them, and thanks!

Riiigght!  With a range around 300-500 meters. No chance they might miss seeing a raghead shooting from concealement until after there is a streak of smoke headed at them.

Yes, its always better to see and shoot the other guy before he see's a shoots you, but why bet on it?  Why not stay dispersed, so even if he gets off the first shot, it will not render you combat ineffective?

They're in a town.  300 meters in a city is pretty rare unless it's from the roof of a building.

To be honest, they are bunched up pretty badly.

Still, we're armchair quarterbacking.  I don't see you over there showing them how to do it right...

Almost 80% of the Army's MP's are guard and reserve units. One of the reasons I got out was that right around the time of Desert Storm the Army started converting most of the reserves to POW units. Now it looks like the big need is for rear area security and escort \ patrol units. Any reservist or guardsman who is an MP had better get ready for at least a year of deployment.

I joined a LE MP guard unit after I got out of the Corps at the end of 92, figuring that would keep me from stupid deployments. I used the same POW/RAS thoughts you talked about.

I outsmarted myself. They found something for us to do for a year.

I have several good friends from high school in that unit that I still hang out with. I was with them the night before leaving to the mideast and we were all joking about how they would probably end up guarding oil rigs  in the middle of no where. I guess we were all wrong. God bless them.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the US Armed forces have been downsized for years even before Clinton. In fact, much of the downsizing has come on the advice of senior military men who want a leaner, meaner force with technical superiority.

Here's a video of them on a typical day in Baghdad.

--------
6/23/2003 — Baghdad Patrol -- Video

The day after Christmas 2002, the 3rd Battalion, 124th Infantry Regiment of The Florida Army National Guard was mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom. After arriving in Kuwait in early February, the battalion marched to Baghdad, providing security for a shield of patriot missile batteries deployed for force protection. Now, the battalion finds itself in the heart of the reconstruction of Iraq, from security operations, to neighborhood patrols, these citizen soldiers from the sunshine state are on the job. National Guard Bureau's Sr. Broadcast Photojournalist SFC Paul Mouilleseaux takes you on a tour of downtown Baghdad, with "The Soldiers on the Point".

Hoooah!!!

Nice to the guys getting some recognition. I was fortunate enough to be with Alpha Co. 1/124 back in 90-91 did some "training" in Panama with them just after I separated from the Regular Army.

I just did these numbers yesterday.  In real spending (constant dollars) from 1988-1992 there was about a 7 percent reduction in military spending.  From 1993-2000 there was a 22 percent decrease in military spending.  You can do the calculations yourself at www.cbo.gov.  They link to the constant dollar data at OMB.
