scratch at the floor when he drinks water from his dish? Does he think he has to dig for it?

Ours digs at the actual bowl (or glass) edge while getting in postition to drink.  Quite often she'll end up with her paw in the water or tipping the container over.

Why? HTF should I know why a cat does anything?  I've only lived with them for most of my 45 years and don't begin to have a clue.

I've read studies about animal behavior (I'm a psychology major) and it may be due to the fact that it has always done that.  It may have done it the first time it remembers going to the water bowl, so it always does because it thinks its the right thing to do.  Also, the mother cat may have done something of the sort back in the day, so it copied that and does it to this day.  Or, I'm wrong.  I didn't write the studies, just remember them.  Hope it helps!

That sounds logical to me.

Maybe that's why I paw my mug when I drink beer.

I like when they (try to) cover up their food to hide it from others.
Hey, where'd my socks go?

I have lived with cats off and on since I was 9.  A long time ago, I stopped wondering why they act certain ways.  Cats are weird creatures.

The reason they do that is because they have scent glands in their paws. They are marking their territory. They have scent glands in the sides of their faces too, that's why they rub up against stuff all the time. It's just territoriality. AR15zams pawing thing he is talking about has to do with cats kneading at certain objects like a furry blanket or something. This often is a result of a cat being taken away from it's mother too early. If you want to make fast friends with a cat, blink at it. If it blinks back it's being friendly. Staring is aggressive.

Bingo. ILL is right.

The "kneading" once stimulated milk to drop from the cat's mother's mammery glands.

What you see is that instinct.

I boarded my cat over the weekend and when we returned from Arizona the bill for his care was much less than expected.  Reading the bill, it said they were UNABLE TO GIVE HIM HIS SHOTS OR HIS BATH.

I was so proud.   What a stud.

Imagine if you got wind that the government considered it UNLIKELY HE WILL GIVE UP GUNS AND UNABLE TO COLLECT CONFISCATORY TAXES.

edit:  Actually I think it was more the weekend crew slacked off when they saw he was not inclined to be cooperative.
