My father had it stashed away and recently "found" it. I know it isn't anything special, but if anyone has any info on what it is, I'd appreciate it. The only markings on it are included in the pics. It seems like it's an FN manufactured rifle... probably .308?

Anyway, any info would be VERY much appreciated!

A Mauser of FN manufacture. Several varities exist.

Might also be a 7mm or 8mm mauser cartridge.

Possibly sporterized at one point as well.

Thanks guys... if that's what it is, any idea of what this gun might be worth?

If not, what's the best way for me to figure out what it's chambered in?

As the gents say, it's a sporterized Mauser. Mine is chambered in .270; most are chambered in .30-06-derived calibers, as the longer ammo tends to feed more reliably in the long-action Mauser, but plenty of them are chambered in .308 as well, as the case head is identical.

As stated before, its a sporterized Mauser. Good luck finding out for sure what to feed it. Can you contact the original owner?

Specifically it started life as an FN24 before some bubba got ahold of it and destroyed it.

Looks like a commercial Mauser made by FN in the 1950's. Sear used to sell them (MIL has a huge pile of catalogues fromt he 50's, they sold some great guns. They have one just like it in a 1954 catalogue.

With the original military stepped bbl in it, there is a good chance that it's 8mm Mauser. Take it to a local gunsmith and have him do a chamber cast to be sure. It could be 8mm-o6 or anything really. If you were closer I'd cast it for you.

I concur with Balming. It looks like it's wearing the original stepped barrel. It's probably 8mm Mauser (aka 7.92 Mauser) or 7mm Mauser. Have a gunsmith check it out.

In the 50's FN made a bunch of 30 caliber mausers for the South Americans. Most were 30-06 & some were .308. These would have the step barrels as well. I have had 1 .308 and 2 30-06's. It's fairly easy to tell what you have. Measure the bore. That will narrow it down. If it is .30, see if it will chamber empty cases of 06 or 08. This will give you thge basic info. Then you can check the headspace if you feel it necessary.

Thanks for all the input guys - I appreciate it! It does have a serial number on the opposite side of the bolt... any idea where I can "run" the serial number to try to find out more about the gun? Sorry if that's a "newbie" question... I'm learning!

For those who care, I took it to a gunsmith who took it apart to find out what it was. It has no other markings on it other than a small german symbol where the receiver meets the barrel. His guess was that it was a Mauser made in the late 50's or 60's and that it was in unbelievably good condition.
It turns out that it is chambered in 30-06.
