It takes about 3 minutes to load with DSL.
Can anyone tell me how to save it to my HD?

Right click the link and do a Save As.  Should save as soul2.mov to wherever you want to put it.

HOLY SHIT [shock]

One misjudgment and you are a bug on Mother Nature's windshield.

These will be the guys first in line for orbital skydiving.

That's pretty sweet!!!

Right-click on the link, then "save target as" and it should work.

OOPS. Too slow.

Try right clicking and doing a Save As.  Your browser may not be handling the .mov extention properly.

The file is a 5.4Mb QuickTime movie.  Well worth seeing.

That looks like fun; as long as you don't miss and eat a rock.

think of a low flying terrain following missile, now substitute a person who just jumped out of a helicopter for that missile

Wobblin check out this link.http://www.popsci.com/popsci/aviation/article/0,12543,459355,00.html
Then imagine this done following a mountain slope and passing two hikers in while skimming the snow about five feet off the deck then swooping out over a cliff to open the parachute.
A person is actually skydiving 5 feet off the ground following the slope of a mountain!!!!

I would have liked to see him give the hikers a high five - his 'wing' would have warped, and he would have crashed at what looked like 150 MPH.
Link Posted: 6/22/2003 9:34:38 AM EDT
[#17]
A good "Birdman" can more than double his normal freefall time. That puts his downward velocity in the neighbourhood of 50mph. His forward speed is somewhere above 70mph.
Math wizzards? Whats his speed on the vector?
Link Posted: 6/22/2003 9:57:25 AM EDT
[#18]
A^2 = B^2 + C^2 where B and C are the right angle legs of the triangle.

sqrt(50^2 + 70^2) = 86 mph.

That's because it's QuickTime (an Apple format).

The day M$ licenses the codec from Apple to include in WMP is the day you can have a snowball fight in hell. [:D]

You can download the free player from www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

I think this is possible by the slope of the mountain, and I believe he may be in "ground effect". Which is a cushion of air between an object(creating lift) and the ground.

Yep, just wathced it again, he is difinately in ground effect...

Awesome video, great find..

Yeah, this guy is going to get some ground effects when he hits that big rock.
Link Posted: 6/22/2003 11:38:38 AM EDT
[#25]
I thought ground effect only occured at distances less than the span of the wing above the ground.
These suits work the same at 10,00 feet. I've seen 'em.
Link Posted: 6/22/2003 12:07:55 PM EDT
[#26]
From what I see he's matching his rate of decent to match the slope of the mountain.  What that much energy in the bank and the suit you can adjust your flight path to match the profile of the slope (within limits, of course).

I wonder what the flight envelope looks like for that setup?  Spread between Vne and best glide/min sink rate?  [:D]

It's still a damn fine illustration of flight control and energy management.

That looks like fun! Hey Captainpooby - do you think my balance point changing by me crapping my pants continuously during the flight would cause me to crash?

INSANE!

What would be even cooler is if he had skis on, and landed on them and skied down the rest of the mountain.  It would be similar to the ski jumpers, just on a larger scale.

Holy Sh*t Bat(Bird)man! That is some wacked-out stuff! In ten years, more people will be doing that than traditional skydiving!

Wow!

Thanks for all the links, guys.

I'm suprised his CG isn't screwed up because his balls are so damn big.

Direction changes are relatively easy in those suits. You just kind of "think" where you want to go. No shit.
And no, most skydivers shy away from those things. Something about skydiving in a straight jacket.
I think I will have to try one though. If I shoot my perspective video of it can someone host it for a thread?

he says. "And we definitely need to improve the overall profile of the flier. But the ultimate goal is to fly to the ground and land without the parachute."

They do that stuff in the new Tomb Raider flick. They do BASE jumping, though.  The trailer had some freaking AWESOME stunts, I might actually go see it.
