If you read it, just about every semi automatic pistol will be banned.  Since the slide assembly on semi's covers the barrel (excl the beretta, Luger and P38 and a very few others) such as in the 1911, the Glock, the ruger, the springfield XD etc... they can be considered a barrel shroud.  Combining a detachable magazine and barrel shroud would make them illegal.  This won't work...

(36) BARREL SHROUD- The term `barrel shroud' means a shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel of a firearm so that the shroud protects the user of the firearm from heat generated by the barrel, but does not include a slide that encloses the barrel, and does not include an extension of the stock along the bottom of the barrel which does not encircle or substantially encircle the barrel.

This doesn't actually look much worse then what we have now, not that I'm defending it. That's probably why it has relatively strong support in a climate in which even most Democrats think gun control is a losing issue. With the strong pro-gun committee chairs, I doubt it will ever leave the committee.

Troublesome aspects appear to include:

`(4) It shall be unlawful for a licensed manufacturer, licensed importer, or licensed dealer who transfers a large capacity ammunition feeding device that was manufactured on or before September 13, 1994, to fail to certify to the Attorney General before the end of the 60-day period that begins with the date of the transfer, in accordance with regulations prescribed by the Attorney General, that the device was manufactured on or before September 13, 1994.'.

Sounds like an attempt to start registering pre-ban mags. And:

`(5) It shall be unlawful for any person to transfer a semiautomatic assault weapon to which paragraph (1) does not apply, except through--

`(A) a licensed dealer, and for purposes of subsection (t) in the case of such a transfer, the weapon shall be considered to be transferred from the business inventory of the licensed dealer and the dealer shall be considered to be the transferor; or

`(B) a State or local law enforcement agency if the transfer is made in accordance with the procedures provided for in subsection (t) of this section and section 923(g).

`(6) The Attorney General shall establish and maintain, in a timely manner, a record of the make, model, and date of manufacture of any semiautomatic assault weapon which the Attorney General is made aware has been used in relation to a crime under Federal or State law, and the nature and circumstances of the crime involved, including the outcome of relevant criminal investigations and proceedings. The Attorney General shall annually submit the record to the Congress and make the record available to the general public.'.

My initial reaction is that this bill is DOA.

HOWEVER...

Given the recent political history of our friends at the NRA, one might be inclined to predict that by the appropriate time, some of the shit you see in this new bill will become reality.

Think about it. It's the way the NRA works. They (the antis) dream up shit Hitler and Stalin would rejoice over, and the NRA meets them halfway.

Things better be different this time around or my support for the NRA and the Republicans is fucking history.

Guys, we've been down this path at least three times in the last two weeks!  I met with my congresswoman a month ago at the VFW.  The first topic was the AWB and why I think it should sunset and any new attempt to renew it by the liberals NEVER make it to the President's desk.  She ASSURED me that it was DOA and that the Republican leadership has assured the rank and file in the House and Senate that they need not even BOTHER to bring any of these up.  Trust the Dems to try anyway...just to embarrass the President.  They damn well know its a done deal...but they are searching for anything that might stick to Dubya.

Regardless of the political manueverings and shady dealings, all of the attempts to revive the AWB in this pre-election year are futile and doomed to failure.

Fret not...this sucker is going to sunset and NOTHING else is going to make it out of committee...NOTHING.

It's not as bad as it looks. Of the 84 cosponsors, 51 of them are from the predictable
liberal, anti-gun hotbeds (CA-19, MA-8, NY-11, NJ-6, IL-7). Even if they get 51 more, it's still very unlikely it will get out of committee hearings.

Compare it to the Senate version; S. 1043. that only has 8 cosponsers and 5 of them are either from CA, MA, NY and NJ. And that's for the bill that has a better chance of reaching the floor for a vote. And assuming it did make it out of committee, and was passed, it would still have to be voted on and approved by the House.

In contrast, S. 659 (The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act), now has 53 cosponsers.
It only needs 6 more votes to block Schumer and Lautenburgs threat of a fillibuster. [:)]

It should have never gotten 84 cosponsors!

It should have never even been written!

The politicians who support shit like this should have been tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail for pissing on the Bill Of Rights like this. [;D]

This bill is SO unconstitutional - it's equivalent to banning books that teach lethal self-defense, churches that preach the right-to-life or private gatherings of four or more men. It is UTTERLY an abomination to the Constitution and I am just getting so fucking SICK of these bills that have absolutely NO constitutional basis, principle or footing to be written on!!! [pissed]

And so like [red]HELL[/red] am I gonna get lackadaisical and over-confident that crap like this bill will die by itself in committee.

I wanna KILL this fucking bill myself with a fucking stake through the heart so it NEVER rises again!!!

I want this bill killed so bad, so publically and so thoroughly that these fucktard politicians will never even THINK about trying to bring this up again for the next 50 years!!!

I want this bill to be so utterly and soundly defeated that it'd make Mondale's loss in '84 look like a squeaker!!!

I want it so thoroughly snuffed, stuffed and stomped on that if ANY freedom-fearing, Constitution-shredding, gun-grabbing, book-burning Nazi/Commie ASSHOLE EVER brings another bill like it up again - all the other like-minded Nazi/Commie assholes will remind him of how badly they were bitch-slapped the last time such a blatantly unconstitutional gun-banning bill was proposed. {deep breath}

But I know what Congress looks like right now and I know what this nation looks like right now.

So we WILL have to kill this in Committee.

=============================================================

[blue]* * * I hope you guys don't mind if I keep reposting this every time this topic comes up * * * [/blue]

Our goal should be to kill these bills before they ever see the light of a CNN camera. We have to make sure that anti-RKBA bills get buried in committee - and stay buried.

Towards that end, we need to SUPPORT and ENCOURAGE these particular House members because they have these and all other anti-RKBA bills in THEIR hands right NOW.

Right now we have strength in the House and THAT'S where we need to focus our efforts - and our emails, letters and phone calls.

108th US Congress -

HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER -
(this is who is most responsible for "moving" bills or "sidetracking" bills in the House)
* Rep. Tom DeLay, R-TX: GOA rating: A

[blue]Just look at that straight-A line-up! [bounce][/blue]

THIS is what a Republican-majority can do - but the battle's just beginning now!

This is our BEST chance to kill these kinds of bills.

Right now we got a
GOA-[red]A[/red]-rated Committee Chairman,
GOA-[red]A[/red]-rated Subcommittee Chairman,
MAJORITY of GOA-[red]A[/red]-rated Subcommittee members, and a
GOA-[red]A[/red]-rated House Majority Whip.

Now we can piss and moan all we want to about what bills are introduced and who introduced them - but THESE PEOPLE are the ones who can keep or kill them.

Contact them and let them know that these anti-gun bills are blatant violations of the 2nd Amendment and "remind" them that the 'gun-control' issue was a MAJOR factor in the success of conservative Republicans in both the 2000 and 2002 elections and will continue to be so in the future.

And if you live in any of these Rep's States (or better yet their districts) you MUST contact them OFTEN and let them hear from the people who will be voting in their next election.

Just think...
...it only takes EIGHT people in this one subcommittee to bury these bills - DEAD.

If we can't kill shitbills like this with a House line-up like that - it's over.

We MUSTkeep the pressure on these guys - ESPECIALLY the newer House members!!

YES!

Email is probably spam to them. But send it anyway.

And snailmail is almost worse than that! But send it anyway.

Check out this warning on Orrin Hatch's website:
"To protect mail handlers from anthrax, all congressional mail is being diverted to either Ohio or New Jersey for anthrax screening. This new mail procedure has caused significant delays, with some letters taking [red]months[/red] to arrive at our office."

"It should have never gotten 84 cosponsors!
It should have never even been written!"

The Democrats don't expect this one to pass.  They want to use this as something to hammer the Republicans in their ads.  "Dangerous assault weapons are back on the streets.  Our children have to go to school dodging bullets sprayed from AK47's and Uzi's.  We MUST have reasonable gun controls, but the Republicans have blocked us at every attempt."

So, later they will comeback with a watered down version that is still as bad, or worse, than the AWB we have now, and say that they are compromising, not hurting hunters and sportsmen.

Remember. Revolutionary movement have numbers, and the guerilla advantage. Also, once their supply lines are cut, their Humvees, Abrams tanks, Apaches, and F16s become worthless scrap metal. Then the armories are overrun and the revolutionaries are well equipped. Then it will be a one way trip on the seasaw.

Just have it amended to remove ALL law enforcement exemptions. - AS required for equil protection under the law.

Getting it properly amended would be the hard part.

Read the army field manual on guerrilla warfare. They know what has to happen to make a revolution work, and they know what has to be prevented to keep one from happening. That's why they only infringe a few rights at a time. This is no different.

I still send letters to the local office of my Congressman Doc Hastings and to the reginal office in Spokane for Senator Cantwell.

These are answer prompty. Also I haven't given a thought towards anthrax screening.

I also email and phone their offices. I have had one sit down with the Congressman this year so far.

My congressman is Robert Simmons (R) CT. He defeated that SOB Sam Gejdensen in 2000.

He knows me already so contacting him won't be a problem.

If Democrats want to have any believability in these "reasonable' gun restrictions they should first have the good sense to acknowledge the 2nd Amendment, then make their "reasoned" claim.  The strategy of denial and damnation of firearms has not proven to be a winner but it doesn't seem to discourage these unimaginative politicians.

That bill has no chance of surviving.  Won't ever get to a floor vote at all.

The 84 sponsors of it are the radical democrats in the House.  A definite minority.

It goes nowhere but to the shitcan.  (Tabled, they call it.)
