Probie officer with ride-a-long?
Huh? That wouldn't happen around here. WAY too much liability. Should of immediately disengaged once he took fire. |

Heck, ride-a-longs for where I work aren't even allowed to go near anything high-risk (i.e pursuits for one). If that was sanctioned by his department, they really need to re-evaluate their policy. Why on Earth was an officer just out of training carrying a ridealong?
And she needed to STFU. |

Shots fired real soon into it, changed all that. |

View Quote I was thinking how does a rookie two weeks out get a ride along I'm guessing adrenaline probably got to him and probably his first pursuit is why he didn't stop. Temporary brain lock. Where is the rest of the video or did the guys get caught? |

In this case, I wonder if it was a friend, family, or someone he was trying to impress. Either way, I would have made her get out. Not because of safety, but because she wouldn't shut up! |

That rookie is so new that he doesn't even know that the vehicle is equipped with a siren.
If he can't run the equipment he sure doesn't need a distraction in the car with him. Especially one that cries like a siren. |

Madera police are looking for the people who fired more than a dozen rounds at an officer as he tried to pull over their vehicle early Sunday morning. The officer was unhurt, but a civilian who was doing a ride-along received minor cuts from glass from the patrol car’s windshield. Police found the vehicle, a Mazda SUV, a few blocks from where the officer last saw the vehicle. An AR15-style pistol was found nearby.

I've done ride-alongs when I did news, worked for network and so on. K9 ride alongs were the most frequent to go south but I sure loved the effect the dog had on the ghetto rats. Never saw shots fired though. Did have one officer tell me, "Get the fuck down and stay in the car". Sure thing. |

No one likes having ride alongs so they always get stuck with the newest officer, not surprising their newbie had one.

Glad the officer and the ride along didn't catch one. Little close for comfort as it is. Kinda surprising the asshole was able to actually get some hits, moving platform to moving target, at night, with no sights. Looks like well inside 50 yds though. Good thing the bad guy wasn't more competent. That could have gone a whole lot worse. |

Seems like a story planted with the media to hype sentiment against AR pistols and "cop-killing bullets".

ETA: The more I think about it, the less that I think that it was... While the rookie (extreme rookie) is a bad idea, I did a ride along a few weeks back, with a seasoned officer. She gave me instructions on when to exit the car and other commands on car stops and such. We did a drug bust of a car stop (they had been watching the house), a burglar alarm call, I never once felt in jeopardy. They even allowed me to carry my gun on me (concealed). I had a great time, though the reason I rode along was to monitor their radios for coverage issues. I plan to ride again but this time watch the action. The lady riding along on that video sounded like she had no business riding with a meter maid. |

Madera’s a small city in pretty much the dead-middle of California, deep in the vast desert between Yosemite National Park and the Pacific Ocean. Law Street calls it the sixth most dangerous metro area in the western United States based on its violent crime-per-capita data for last year.
