Weird place for a rub, out in the open. Are you infested with deer?

Antler rub, for sure. If bear it would have parallel claw marks.

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees |

My German Shepherd dog, when I leave in the morning he runs out and rears up ,scratches and bites the tree.
I've never seen, or had a dog, do anything like this. He is pretty big, and still just a pup almost 1 year old |

In your AO, maybee deer. im guessing that tree is a softwood, like a juniper. that amount of damage is typical in softwood species. nevermind.... your dog. that's funny |

That looks too deep to be from a deer. More like a bear. Bear is a good guess too. Not if that cheap piece of wire fence stopped it since a bear would tear right through it. |

No way that is an antler rub.
Bear or Porcupine, or possibly insect infestation that a bear came in to exploit, but there is not a large black bear population in MO. ETA I should have read the thread and I would have seen the OP answered it already. |
