Those that have used both, which do you prefer-and why?

Also, of the current offerings, which models do you recommend?

They weren't bad but they're over. MS has stopped development, other than fixes, and no new models will be released.

I didn't know Windows phones still existed.

Also, my wife worked for Verizon.  She knows of exactly one (1) employee that used a Windows phone.

My first smart phone was a windows phone but that was 8 years ago. It wasn't bad, but needed restarted a lot. I then went with Apple which also wasn't bad, but I am now on my second Droid and we will probably stick with them in 6 months when this plan ends.

Ok, so android is better that windows for a phone OS.

Now, which manufacturer makes a reliable android based phone?

I love, love, love my windows phone.

I'm over 50 and was never a tech type. I know and understand windows phone apps and I found android to be overly complicated and updated too often for my old brain to keep up.

So, I'll run a windows phone for as long as I can.

Samsung (minus note 7)
Also the Google Pixel phones that just came out should be good to go.

If you want apps, you'll want android. I had two windows phones, and while they worked pretty well, I found myself frustrated by the lack of apps. The developers focus their efforts on writing apps for the biggest markets, which are Iphones and android.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with my Samsung S7.

IIRC the droid is Motorola's flagship phone, yes?

I know few folks who went from Apple to Android and they all said the same thing. "Fuck iTunes!!"

I have a windows phone, love it.  Not sure what I'm going to do when it dies,  probably get a dumb phone rather than try to figure out either of the other choices.

I hate all of the crap that samsung piles on.

Either the current nexus or something damn close to vanilla android (like the Experias) is best.

Windows phones were cool but nobody was developing apps for them so nobody bought them. Android has the most to offer and at competitive prices.

Can't you root any of the android phones and remove the bloatware; is that a feature of the past?

Microsoft has retired and failed trying to get into mobile electroNics including phones and music players.

They keep trying to implement their tile system, and it's still being forced on Xbox consumers.

Everyone I know with an android or windows phone that likes to talk about how great it is, has problems with them. Then I laugh at them.

I'll stick with my iphone.

AT&T

And I obviously don't care what other phones people use. Use what makes you happy. But when you try to convince me your phone is better then it acts up, I'm going to give you shit

I used to have a Windows phone. My lumia was a well made, durable,
slick phone. The lack of apps was an issue that just became worse over time.

Always promises of updates, tons of new apps, etc. Didn't deliver
enough for me to stick with it.

Don't bother with it now unless it fulfills some very specific purpose Android can't (doubtful any exists)

I picked up a windows phone for 40 bucks last year for shits and grins.  I liked it, however there was/are no apps for it.  Hell, even Amazon dropped support of their app.

Me too!
So simple to use. If all you want is talk, text, web and gps it's perfect. In fact I recently upgraded to a Samsung galaxy and after using it for a month I gave it to the kid and went back to my Nokia windows phone.

ETA the integration between my windows laptop and the phone is awesome too.

I had a Windows phone for a while and loved it. Nokia Lumia something or other - 920 maybe. Great phone and OS, but no apps.
I switched to a Galaxy when it was time for an upgrade.

Oh, and fuck Apple. I have an iPhone 6 and iPad air 2 for work - both are jam-o-matics. They freeze, drop off bluetooth, etc. at least once per week. "It just works" my ass.

Windows phone is a much nicer is in day to day use that either of the others OS wise. MS continues to develop and update the OS. As for phones, the soon to be announced Surface Phone is what you want to wait for; rumored to be running an intel 7th gen "core" processor.

ETA: Supposed to run both mobile apps and pc programs.

It's funny because everyone I've known w/ a Windows phone hated it.   Microsoft needs to make their mobile platform work or they're going to become increasingly irrelevant in the future, but they are only going to get so many do overs before nobody will touch them.

I used a Nokia Lumina go phone that was Windows for a few months, the OS worked just fine and the only downside was lack of apps and customization.

My wife did.

Got a Nokia Lumia 1020 since it has an "awesome" camera.

Within days, started bitching about not finding apps for it.

She now has a LG V10 about a year now and likes it alot.

I love Windows phones.  I'm still using a Lumia 920, and I'll keep using it till it wears out.  The operating system is great, live tiles give me good information at a glance, and the cameras on Lumias +9xx are fantastic.
Don't have much experience with Android, but the GS3, and Moto X I've used were all slow and kind of laggy.  You either get the static rows of icons like iOS, or you get widgets that burn up your battery life and slow your phone down to a crawl.

Get yourself a Google Pixel phone. If you buy directly from Google, it has 0 bloatware on it and gets full build updates directly from Google. This model is also able to be rooted for whatever build you'd like to put on it.

If you're on Verizon, and buy it from them, it comes with some apps but they can all be deleted. The Verizon version does not have the bootloader unlocked.
