Marine Corps needs a specops or commando unit? Isn't that a tautology? The USMC is already one big special forces unit, no?

I thought Force Recon was already the Corps' equivalent?

What was that one wwII film where they trained a bunch of marines to recon a beach and deploy from a sub?  Every time they met, they'd say, "ahoy raiders!"

They have to do this for funding reasons.  SOCOM gets their own budget line, while the Marines have to pay for their own insular special ops units like MEU SOC.  Now they can get a piece of the SOCOM pie.

So did I. This new deal sounds like elitist BS to me!

I was of the impression that the USMC historicaly was opposed to the idea of having operational units of Marines in SOCOM, for fear of reducing the unique Marine identity and to prevent SOCOM from trying to get operational control of deployed MEUs.

A Marine friend of mine has been training with the SOCOM Demo team for about a year now.
Two weeks ago he landed on our hanger. It was pretty funny. I'll see if I can get some pics.

wouldn't the airborne rangers be special forces also?

IIRC, this has been under T&E for a while already. 'Bout damn time too!

Yes, amazing as it is, elite military units do tend to be "elitists".

Can you imagine how difficult the training and q-courze will be.

I think they will get some idea that they need to improve on the SEALS.

Gonna be some tough(er) sons of bitches after that.

Probably start with the 6 or 7 smart ones (Marines, that is) and then start recruiting from the ARMY!!!!

Neat fact:

The Marine Raider museum is in Richmond VA.  Why, I don't know.

Recon serves the needs of the FMF only.
This new detachment is already under SOCOM.
Those "elitists" could kick yur ass.

I referred to the idea being "elitist" NOT the members of the unit. At my age, I seldom worry about being in a position that could result in having "my ass kicked."

Yes indeed, typing away anonymously from your keyboard is always the safest bet.

There is little that is anonymous about me as I use my real name (W. E. Tidler Jr./Bill Tidler Jr.) on this board and I do not hide the fact that I live in Tipton IN which is in Tipton County about 30 miles north of Indy. It is a simple fact that I am seldom in any sort of place or predicament anymore that could result in physical danger to me. Being a CCW holder also diminishes the chances of "ass kickings.".
