What do you guys have?  Likes dislikes?  I'm going to use it while I'm riding my quad.  I've got a Banshee and my wife rides a Rancher.  so I end up getting out in front of her sometimes.  I'd like to have something with good range in case I wrap myself around a tree or we get split up.

Check into 2 meter amateur rigs.  the "Technician" license (needed to use) test is rules and theory only now and fairly easy.  You get a lot more range/power and reliability than the Personal Radio Service units plus with 2 meter in a lot of areas there are mountain top repeaters that really increase range.  Plus in a shtf emergency they will work and the freqs won't be filled with all the kids and soccer moms.

Just remember anything in the VHF, UHF or higher bands is "line of sight" only.  VHF (2 meter) bends some.  Basically you can have brush, trees and small buildings in the way but not hills and mountains, etc.

A couple Motorola FRS radios would do the trick for you. No need for more. Set the same code on both radios and go play.

Sounds to me like a pair of FRS radios would work just fine for you too.  You can get a pair of Motorolas or something for like $60 last time I checked, mine have worked well at a pretty good distance.

I would highly recommend the Motorola FRS Radios for your application. I am getting ready to dive into amature HAM right now, but for riding around on your bikes I think that a 2 meter radio would be overkill.
