Good.

Older models will "fan fire". Meaning if you hold the trigger while you pump, it will fire each time the bolt closes until the tube is empty. The Winchester M1897 will do the same thing as will the Norinco M97 clones.

Yes. Are you looking at a used or new one? The NY State Police still carry these and they were made ?? WWII??

The best!!! They were the gold standard in police shotguns until about twenty years ago. I've owned several and currently have two, an Ultra Featherlight 12 gauge (5 1/2 pounds) and a Model 37 M&P (eight shot magazine). Expecting the M&P back from getting teflon'd any day now.

The 37 was descended from the Remington Models 1908/10/17/29, which were the results of Irwin Pedersen and John Browning. Remington discarded the design in favor of their own in-house Model 31 and Ithaca picked it up to supplement their depression-era double gun sales. The rest is history.

[B]HELL YEAH![/B] Bottom eject, slick action, light weight but the only draw back is aftermarket stuff can be hard to find at times.

I wish I had picked up one of the "Homeland Defense" ones a few years ago. I still see them advertised, but Ithaca salesman told me they are not in the current lineup.

I should go on the tour. They even still let you tour the factory-seems like more companies are so scared of getting sued that they are reluctant to do that.

Thanks for all the replies. I just bought two. Local FFL was selling police trade-ins for $160 each (tax included). Finish is non-existent, but functionality and bore are perfect.

I was thinking about getting them parkerized, and put synthetic stocks on one of them.

These Ithaca 37's are 20" barrel with the "slamfire" feature.

If you guys saw a deal like this, would you buy multiple ones?

Absolutly! That ithaca old model is the best damn shotgun ever made; but then I'm left handed[:D] 100% steel and yet light enough to carry on a quail hunt all day.

Put a good quality refinish on those pieces, and your grandchildren will be using them in 50 years.

Bought mine on my 16th birthday and have had it
all these years, never any problems with it.
( except when my Mom shipped it to me via
USPS in the old days , got a blem on the barrel), but fixed that last year with an
exact replacement. Oh yeah I'm 54 now. Damm
how time and hunting seasons fly by.

I own several. I have an old used one in a DEERSLAYER configuration (smoothbore, improved cylinder full length) that cloverleafs Remington slugs at 75 yards. I have complete confidence in it, which can't be replaced.
I had a LEUPOLD 1x Long eye relief scope put on it, an auxiliary peep sight, the finish was non-existent so I painted a camo finish all over everything, wood, metal, rubber.
I also had the barrel cut to 20" and screw in chokes to use for turkey (Never got one.)
It's my "ugly stick", it's downed a lot of deer, and it's going in my casket with me when I get roasted.
Every one of them is reliable and fits me and has gotten some use for birds etc. But the ugly stick is the one gun that I always rely on.

At $160 thats a steal of a deal. Used ones at gunshows around here go from $275 up. You did good my friend.

Your description of the finish and the wear is about right for a dept I worked at.
Fired once a year for about 20 rounds.
Cleaned if the boss was paying attention.
Put back in the case and tossed back into the trunk of the car.
No finish on the outside and almost no wear on the inside.

I have a 16 gauge Model 37. I have no idea how old it is, but I know my dad got it from his grandfather 40 yrs ago. It hasn't missed a single squirrel season since then. I'd say it's held up quite well.

Sure. First off, that is the original length 8-shot magtube (you can still get them.)

The sights were bought from Brownells (can't remember the name, they had a sale on them back in January), and this is where it gets tricky; there was not enough barrel to attach the front sight, so what we did was we installed a thin-wall choke tube, to which the front sight clamps onto. The front sight has a tritium insert, and the rear sight is a fully adjustable ghostring.

I have a Ds Police Special with a Choate full-length stock with pistol grip & choate forend...I'm looking for an original set of walnut furniture. Any suggestions?? Ithaca factory no longer makes that stock.

You rang? Have a 37 buttstock like you need (12 gauge, no checkering, etc.).
