You can do a search on your hardrive for words like: AD, Spy, POP, Deals, offers, etc. and delete them.

download ad-aware. It'll clear out all that junk, including from the registry and etc.

For now, find where your browser keeps your temporary internet files, and clean them out.  Look under tools-internet options, if you're using Internet Exploder.  

Be advised, cleaning out the cookies will probably undo a lot of preferences and "remember my password" stuff you've done at various sites.  You're on your own here.

Myself, I do this via Windows Explorer, the program where you can go looking in all your folders.

I found that with a combination of IE 5.0 and Win98/NT4.0, you also get this sub-folder called Content.IE5 which in turn has its own sub-folders with nonsense names like "4pcxud9","A1g34167", and so on.  You may or may not see any files in them.

Once I've done my other housekeeping and shut down the browser (at work we have a no-choice home page which if your browser is open has image files that interfere with clean-up), then I remove all these weirdly named  sub-sub-folders, but only under that "Content.IE5" subfolder.

That's what I found will stop most pop-ups for me.

But it's risky if you are prone to mishaps. You are warned that it might screw your computer up.  I'd recommend having a techie friend do this with you.

If you got suckered into clicking "yes" to a pop-up in the past that offered to install some free software, improve your performance or synch your computer clock, or that warned you that your computer is broadcasting an "IP address", you may have gotten some 'spyware' which is more insidious and which the method I described above will NOT remove.

That's when that AD AWARE software and similar stuff will come in handy.

better yet, use a decent browser like opera(opera.com), mozilla, or firebird(mozilla.org). All three will let you choose which sites you can allow to set cookies (typically sites you trust, like your bank, stores you frequent, and arfcom, etc). Way better than IE

I downloaded the free AdaWare, but I don't know what to do with it.  Too much BS for this computer illiterate to figure out.  Help?

First run aaw6.exe (which should be the file you dl'ed)
That will install it.
When it's done, you can remove aaw6.exe

Now there should be an ad-aware icon on your desktop, that looks like a hand with a red slash over it. Run that.

In Ad-Aware, hit start, then next, and wait for it to follow. Select all the crap that it found, and follow the dialog boxes.

I had it installed, it was running it that I had trouble with.  Must have been a late night when I first tried it.  Thanks.

I just installed that ad-ware crap and now my browser's on the "orbitz tip and I get gator pop ups..thanks guys.

Click start. Click "next" on the "Preparing system scan"  I will then run its check.  When the check ends, there will be a blinking tick/spider, click next.  There will be a list of Obj. Vendor, type, etc.  Click in the boxes in front of those objects. Click quarantine. It will tell you to name the file, type in a name. Click again.  It will say X-number of objects will be quarantined, click OK. It will say X-number of objects quarantined.  It will go away.  Click next.  It will say X-number of deleted.  Click ok.  There may be some that won't delete because of some window/process running.  Click ok.  Shit should disappear.

Get Popup Stopper from [url]www.panicware.com[/url]  They have a free version and it works pretty well.

I use this and it works well.

For the other Mac user here, the new browser from Apple, Safari, has a pop-up stopper built in.

I'm using PopUpCop based on a suggestion I saw here earlier.  It works like a champ. Bad news is that is does cost a little ($19.00?) Good news you get a 30 day free trial. I don't deal with any popups now.

Funny. IE allows just the same.

Internet Explorer won't block pop-ups and pop-unders.

Spyboy is also highly recommended.

Try naviscope (.com probably) it blocks pop ups, [b]and[/b] online ads, it's a handy little utility-check it out.
They're all free.
