ST. LOUIS, Missouri (CNN) -- Two people were killed and two others wounded in a string of drive-by shootings that took place within minutes of each other Sunday evening, police said.

The shootings began shortly after 5 p.m. (6 p.m. EDT) in a residential area of north St. Louis, said Adella Jones, spokeswoman for the St. Louis Police Department. A "high-powered assault weapon" was believed used in all three shootings, she said.

In the first attack, a man walking down the street was shot in the head and killed by two men in a brown station wagon, Jones said. The same car was seen minutes later in the shooting of another man around the corner.

The second victim was shot several times in the torso and was in critical condition, Jones said.

In the third attack, a man walking down the street in the same neighborhood was shot in the back of the head by men in the same brown station wagon.

"One of the bullets from that shooting went into a backyard, where a woman was sitting," Jones said. "She was grazed in the neck."

The man died, but the woman's injuries were minor, Jones said.

The car was ditched a few blocks away, and witnesses reported seeing two men get out and run away. "It is believed they are responsible," she said.

Police had no motive for the shootings, but they believed all three men were the intended targets. Jones said the shootings were under investigation.

This is the last thing we need. I really hate gang-bangers.

If the neighborhood security had been maintained by armed  honest citizens trained in the use of and equiped with semi auto rifles..these guys would be toast..and woudnt have the guts to come into the neighborhood doing this ...

Pardon me if I doubt Miz Jones knows what she's talking about.

And 9divdoc, you're right on about neighborhood participation in a Crime Stop Program rather than Crime Watch attitude.

Remember when the James and Dalton Gangs rode into Northfield, Minn., for a bank robbery thinking that all they faced were simple German farmers?

Yeah, simple German farmers who happened to be veterans of Gettysburg, Shiloh, Antietam, etc.

Got their butts shot to hell and back.

Great detective work Barney.

The story mentions a "high-powered assault weapon". That could mean it was an illegal black market full auto Uzi or AK-47. Which shows that the problem isn't with legal AR15s and similiar semi-autos, but with lousy enforcement of the laws.
I can assure you that if somebody had the money and a good record to buy a rifle or pistol from a FFL dealer then he/she wouldn't be buying the rifle to be used in a crime. But maybe to stop one.

dont you know we are all lunatics who would murder our own family if it benefited us. bs........ things like this will allways happen, the best thing that could happen is that armed citizens can stop it quickly as the cops wont.

My sympathies go out to the victims and their families, regardless of what the weapon was.

But, THANK GOD it wasn't in CA.

If it happened in CA, the hornets nest would be stirred up and new legislation would be called for immediately.

Not to mention the s**t we get from members of this board.

What if it was a legally owned AR?  I'm not quite sure I understand your point.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I just really don't get it.

How do we even know if it is an assault weapon? Did they recover the weapon? It could just be an anti throwing out a buzz word. They constantly say that crap with no base on the news.

I hate the term "assault weapon" anyways. I don't own a single assault weapon, all I own are assault tools. I am the weapon.

Actually it was the James/Younger gang that came to trouble in Northfield, MN.

The Dalton gang got theirs in Coffeyville, KS.

I agree that there is no guarantee that the gun used was even a rifle for that matter. The reporter was just using a popular buzz word.

That could not have happened, everyone knows assault weapons were banned and are illegal...

Even if it wasn't an assault weapon it doesn't really matter. Unfortunately, the damage has been done. I doubt a retraction would be made if it was found to be a lever action .30-30. If it really is an assault type weapon, then get ready for the news clips of "loophole in the assault weapons ban" talk, while footage of SAWs firing full auto is shown with a silhouette of children on a swing overlaid.

Assult weapon - Anything from a water pistol to a 50 BMG Barrett is labeled assult weapon by the media.  They don't have a clue what they are talking about.

The only one not shot in the head is still alive even after several shots to the torso.  This could be have been done with a 22 as almost any "High Powered" rifle should have killed with several torso shots unless the guy is very lucky.

Yup, I heard that the Capitol police in DC were getting new "high powered" weapons.  Then the showed a pictured and they turned out to be Glock 22s.  Go figure!

It's just fun for journalists to sensationalize a story by invoking Hollywood imagery to seed the imagination of viewers and/or readers.

I was expecting at least a .30-06 to be called high powered, can you saw off a Garand and hold it sideways?

I saw an interview of a police offical concerning this.  He said a "high-powered assault weapon" was apparently used....He based this opinion on the spent shell casings found at the scene(s).  Apparently, that's what the news services are quoting.  The actual weapon has not been recovered.

Do doctors use that sawed off Garand to re-break wrists that haven't healed properly?
OUCH!

Here's more:

Police gave this description of Sunday's shootings:

At 5 p.m. Sunday, the brown station wagon drove up to a man, 22, who was standing on a sidewalk in the 3900 block of Ashland Avenue, three blocks south of the park. A gunman in the back seat sat up and fired several shots, striking the victim in the head. He was in critical condition Monday evening. [blue]Police found six spent 7.62-millimeter casings in the street.[/blue]

Five minutes later, the car drove down the 3800 block of Lee Avenue, two blocks north of the park. The gunman in the back seat shot Corner. Twelve shell casings were found.

Minutes after that, the car drove on the 3900 block of Penrose Street and fired on Evans. No shell casings were found.

Probably an AR-10, there they go. I bet it was Sarah Bradys last wish. Her minions went out and did that shit in an effort to promote gun control. Now she is at home celebrating with gun control laws and a few cartons of Camels. Her dying wish will be to ban these weapons, for the children.

OMG Garand Shooter! You're going to get this thread locked! I think that's considered a perverted, & pornographic thing to do to a Garand (I'm sure it's blasphemous). [:D]

I am sure that the thugs were just holding their SKS when it went off and shot all these people. Because we all know that it is the gun's fault and not the people holding it. Yeah Right!! [pissed]

It probably was something like a 10-22.  'Cause if you recieved "several shots to the torso" from an AK or AR, you'd be nothing but a pile of ground meat.
