It's rude and obnoxious to ask someone how much they make. I was on a construction job when some guy who operated a backhoe we hired asked how much we (the three laborers) made. I just said 50% more than in town. That was me, my coworkers made 100% more than that.
If you get paid according to your productivity, great. |

The business of America is business, as the saying goes, and what you earn or what you are "worth" is the measure of you. You may choose one career path over another, but it boils down to that. It is hard to quantify happiness, but everyone knows what a dollar is worth. |

I have a few friends who are somewhat greedy and focused on who makes what. One of them asked me and I told him to fuck off. The only people that need to know what I am bringing home are my wife, my accountant and the MAN.
This friend is in the cotton business. He has a college degree but nothing higher. He asks one of our attorney buddies (who had to go to school for more years to practice his trade) how much he made and the attorney made the mistake of telling him. So on Monday the cotton boy goes into his boss's office and asks for a raise. [ROFL2] [ROFL2] [ROFL2] What a jackass. |

Was back in MI in 1983 visiting the first wife's family. Her cousin had a town named after him and he was the principle of the local high school.
Him and his bitchy wife asked us out for drinks so we went. They take us to their favorite watering hole, and he orders the first round. When the waitress comes he pulls out a few bills and makes a big show of paying the tab. Here it comes "Hey Ed, I make $35K and a town is named after my family, how much do you make?" "Well as a Jailer, I only made $24K last year but then I made another $16K in overtime. Plus I made another $30K as a Plumber." I then pulled out $3000 and paid for the next round and me and the wife left. ED |

Private paramedics make ~$9/hr in Southern California. I often got asked by women I was trying to date "So, I bet you make a lot with all your overtime, huh?" When I told them the truth the conversation went sour every time. Of course it also went sour when they asked "So, what's the worst thing you've ever seen?" and I told 'em. Just can't win.

I am just about the only one of my groups of friends from back home that went to college, and I make more, and sometimes double, what my friends make. They can see by the toys I have and the things I do for fun that the money is there, but they never ask what I make.
One thing I have noticed, living in South Florida, is that the Spanish cultures have no problem asking you what something costs. I can't go for a ride on my Harley without some spanish guy asking "how much", or go shooting, some spanish guy sees my holster "how much". That gets a little annoying. |

Yep. I get annoyed when people start asking "How much do you make?", "How much did you pay for your house?", "Are you refinancing?, and all that crap.
I just say "It's personal and I don't discuss it." What I make feeds my family, it doesn't define who I am. |

Most of my friends are engineers or have degrees and look down on folks without the same. About that time I ask them if they want to go for a drive in my Lexus or their 1995 Ford Exploder. That usually shuts them up...

Outside of work I don't care about anyone asking and I don't mind telling. I don't think it's that big of a deal, everybody knows that some people make more and some people make less.
At work I won't discuss it with anyone except peers and above because our payscale is so much higer than some people that we work around it's kind of embarrassing to let them know how much we really make compared to them. I don't see what the big secret is unless you're absolutely worthless and are way overpaid for your abilities. |

Everybody seems to think that professional sports players are overpaid, but I've never seen anyone that bitches about it on TV playing with themselves, much less a sport. The same people say that CEOs are overpaid, but I've never seen them run a company. I'd say that a $20/hr ditch digger is overpaid, but there ain't no way in hell you'd get my ass out in the July Texas heat digging ditches for $20/hr. I don't see what is so funny about it. Just because you say that someone is overpaid, it doesn't mean that they are or that you would, or are even capable of doing their job. I just think you worry too much about little stuff... |

I do not have a degree and have made it in a world surrounded by engineers and folks with computer science degrees. I make more money than they do and didn't have to go to school for 5 years which really chaps their ass...
Belfry_Express, while I appreciate your most likely "from experience" opinion of my car being a "POS" I would have to strongly disagree with you. Lexus auto's are some of the best on the road. I also agree that you should put your money into something that appreciates (house) and not a car. I have a nice house as well... C4 |

I married my wife and she is a conservative as am I in a family of liberals. I was asked one day what we make and I promptly replied.
"I pay enough taxes [argue] (38% Tax Bracket)to make sure you and your liberal friends can take from those that have something and give to those who don't so everyone is equal. I wouldn't want your friends to get a job or anything that wouldn't be fair." [pissed] Most of the time if I am asked, I ask them to tell me what they make, and then respond with I do well enough, thanks for asking. |

How old are you in relation to them? I know that Superindendents on my job are in thier 50's, and make more than me. Many of them have no college at all. However, the VP of operations that is over my project is in his 40's, and makes more than them. It's important to compare apples to apples. |

I've rarely been asked how much I make. When asked, though, I generally reply, "None of your business," since, of course, it is nobody's business but mine and my company's. However, if someone starts the whole, "I make more than you" crap, I generally respond, "Probably not, but who gives a shit?"

I also know engineers, software developers, etc. who have been able to "get by" without a degree. Someone gives them a chance, and they are able to run with it and do pretty well without a degree. I also know several people with degrees, certifications, etc., who can't do sh*t. I have family that didn't have degrees when they started working... and have been doing really well. In fact, some companies will hire you, pay you to go to school, get your degree, and then give you a raise. |

I never get asked directly...
I do remember when I got transferred to St. Louis, Mo. to work for SWB Mobile Systems. I often got asked "what school did you go to?" I would tell them what college I had attended. They would then say no..."What HS did you go to?" I would aswer and then the "ohh you didn't grow up in St. Louis." Next question was where do you live(as in N,S,E,or West). I got this ALL the time. I finally asked a guy I worked with what the deal was. He informed me that this was a way to sum up what you were worth and your family background. He did tell me that I should make it a point to say that I lived "out west". You guys in St. Louis may know what i'm talking about. |
