Maybe I'm too old, but I don't get it. Lots of bands have great aggressive music, but totally drop the ball when it comes to a singer. I say singer, but growler/screamer is more like it. I guess they've either acknowledged that they can't find a singer, or think that their image is just too tough for vocal talent. Perhaps a true singer would only highlight the state of their lyrics, so maybe a growler may indeed be better.
I went to High School from '84-88, so I was a big metalhead. As I said, some of the recent wave of metal bands that I've heard (Kill Switch Engage, etc) have talent, but really require a singer rather than a vocalist. |

Thats why I like Hardcore more than Metal, even Death and Speed.(for the most part) The vocals just fit the music better, imo. Now it is real easy to goof on some HC vocals. Singin that fast gets easy to slurr stuff together.

IMO, this is what differentiates Metallica, Maiden, Queensryche, and Fates Warning (a favorite, but not commercially successful). Hatfield is no Tate in the vocal area, but he none the less wrote a good story. It just irks me to hear some bands that have the potential to become true 'artists' waste it. They seem to have the attidude that this music isn't supposed to be an art form, it's 'supposed' to be loud, raw and in your face. (the conformity of the non-conformist) Then again, perhaps I'd be the only one to buy the album if they did that. (I'm still looking for someone who writes at the same level as Steve Harris.) |

I haven't heard Biohazard since State of the World Address. I always liked them, even though I don't like rap type music at all.
On a related note, my supervisor told me he's going to Chicago in August to see Iron Maiden, Dio, and Motorhead. Kind of a "roots" event; hell, I'd go just to see Lemmy! |

You're getting sucked back in to the scene! When I got married I sold all of my HC records and CD's...... Now I'm kicking myself, as I'm having to go out and buy them all over again, which is not a easy task!! Hard to find alot of the older stuff!
AF always has and always will be my favorite. taking 'em to my grave!!! "Anthem" has got to be my favorite AF song! MadBall, 25 tah Life (dah shit!), SOIA, Sheer Terror,Yuppicide, SFA, Killing Time, Breakdown, Lifes Blood, Murphys Law, Leeway,Cro-Mags, Youth Of Today, Bold, Warzone, Gorilla Biscuts, Integrity, Earth Crisis, Snapcase, Arrrrrrrrrgggg The list could go on! Lot's of good bands use to come to town, Token Entry! Saw them.... Show ruined by a bunch of out of town boot-boys! Saw GBH and AF at the milk bar in jacksonville! Yea COC and UA use to come to florida alot.....Being they where only in North Carolina! B'last, Bad Brains, Underdog, Verbal Assault, The Accused, the Icemen, No For An Answer....... Dang I could name a couple thousand Hard Core bands!!!!! |

Best concert I was ever at was the Extreme Steel Tour a few years back here in Phoenix.
I really didn't like the other bands besides Pantera, but Pantera was worth sitting through all the other bands.[headbang] And just so I know, what does Ted Nugent's music qualify as? |

Man, The Age of Quarrel from the Cro-Mags. I think that is the best NYHC album ever, shit best Hard Core album ever. I miss the old Sunday shows at CB's. My friend used to play drums for the Crumbsuckers way back in the day. Another friend played drums with Warzone before Raybees passed on. I saw someone spit in Kirk Hammets face in like 84-85. He said, "get off the stage you heavy metal dick", then spit.
Personally, now I'm totally into Grindcore and Death Metal. The fact that you cant understand the lyrics is a plus. Must of the lyrics you can understand today are gay, liberal bitching, or some sad ass, wanna be power punk band bitching about their allowance being to small. Well. I just put on some Nile, feeling much better now. God, Nile are heavy as f***. |

I have nothing to add at this juncture, except to say that I want to tag this thread in case something pops up later that I feel like I just have to comment on. So far the discussion between Dru and Pat have hit on most of it.
Oh, I will ask one thing, Dru, what's the "scene" like around there these days? I guess by the time I left I was too damn old for that town. There were freshcut kids coming into M&C and asking me if I was [insert real name here]. That got a little strange, people knowing you but you don't know them. Like some kinda weird celebrity, haha. |

Kick Ass!!! It's been about 10 years since I got to see a Biohazard show.. Last time I seen them was at SeaSea's In Moosic PA (club has been closed for a long time). Seen alot og good hardcore shows there, Sheer Terror and Life of Agony were 2 that I used to see there alot. Fights?? Yea there were a few, usually only when we were booting the f..ing nazis out.

Ha! I was a Chicago skin (non-racist) from 83-84 to 97 and I'm here to tell ya you can't go home no more... The scene will never be what it was in the 80's although there are some bands that keep it alive. The Templars out of New York kick ass, my best friend in all the world plays bass for them. The Anti-Heros from Atlanta are also great. I became a skin because being pro-America did not go over well with the punks in Chicago, not to mention that we were the top of the crop and pretty much ran shit in those days. I remember seeing bands like the Effigies, Naked Raygun, etc... Raygun had several ironically patriotic songs. I was into Bad Brains, AF, Warzone, JUDGE (they were awesome!) pretty much all of the straight-edge stuff. But I think my first show was Black Flag and the Exploited. When Wattie sang "Fuck the USA" there was a near riot... they never finished the song or their set. I was like 13 years old and running all the way up to the north side of town on public transportation by myself! I miss those days like crazy! I am thankful that I was a part of it, I didn't realize that I was so lucky to have been a part of what will probably be the last of the great underground rock and roll subcultures. What a great ride! Thanks for bringing all of this up guys!

You can definitely NOT go home again. EVER. I used to be rabid ass SHARP, then lightened up to Traditional. We had a scene that was made up of everything from Mods to Punks with recovering Hammers and Recovering SHARPS meeting in the middle at the Apolitical Traditional level of Drunken Oi!.Politics is for people who don't know how to drink properly. I'd rather hang with an old school ex-Hammer Skin today than a new-Jack traditional. To me the enemy IS the new-jack. They do more damage than any Nazi ever has. Listenin to some yahoo brag about selling coke, at a Hatebreed & Biohazard show. WTF, over? "Have you ever listened to the lyrics to 'Urban Disciplin' you moronic pinhead?" I know this is the "old fart's cliche'" but we really weren't that dumb when we were their age were we?

speaking of pro-american tour, i recently saw godsmack in sioux falls, SD. it was awsome and very patriotic. the show started with a large text message on the big screens about remaining united and not givin up in the war on terror and such. thier was also lots of footage from the war.

We're discussing youth culture from the late 70's through the 90's to today.Punk Rock, Skinheads, Hardcore, REAL Metal. They all tend to overlap a little in our angry little world. I have heard a really cool Punk cover of Whiskey River by Willie Nelson. Course when Willie plays live it's so damn fast it could be almost considered HC just for the speed factor. LOL.

Hell I saw Skrewdriver live in London in 1988... Sounds like you and me led parallel lives (I'm 33 too). I went through all of the political bullshit, Anti-Racist Action and then later SHARP and after realizing that both ARA and SHARP were getting infiltrated by radical communist organizations got the hell out and opposed them as well as the boneheads. In fact one day me and a few friends got into it with a bunch of reds selling the Communist Worker (I flipped over their table, kind of kicking things off) got called nazis/facists etc... then walked two blocks and had a serious confrontation with a group of nazi skins which sent two of our guys to the ER. Personally I really don't give a shit what a person's scene politics are. I've had friends on both sides and towards the end was usually too busy being drunk and trying to get laid to care. I'm married w/ kids right now and the last "show" I went to was Toby Keith. I am still involved with the scene peripherally through a couple of friends, mainly my friend Perry who plays bass with the Templars and the rest of the guys in the band. I also email a few old friends periodically. I am in the military (reserves), work, and try to raise two well-adjusted and healthy kids. I did marry a skinhead girl who grew out her chelsea and is now a superhero known as mom. I loved it with all of my heart but as they say, all good things... |

Is it just me, or does a Chelsea automatically make a bird lose her fucking mind? Every bird I've ever known with a Chelsea has been a nutjob. I have bunches of friends that were birds back in the day that back me up on this. As soon as the chelsea is in, krink-snap something wrong. It's a cute haircut, I love the way birds look all dolled up for SKA shows showin a little garter belt at the bottom of a short skirt with some loafers and such. But the haircut makes 'em loony. And some never recover. Glad to see yours did.
Gordon from Patriot has been one of my best friends since about 84. He's a flight instuctor now. Templars, good band. Yeah, as soon as ARA started preaching about gender issues I was like you guys is fired. Buddy of mine got murdered by some SHARPS in Chicago for hanging out with an EX-Nazi in his unit in the Navy. He was Rockabilly for christ sakes. Yeah that pretty much sealed it for me. |

Man, I'd post some pics of my wife at the Hepcat show I met her at, but she won't let me. She was trad all the way, rode a Vespa, etc... Her friends were a bunch of snobs with lots o mom and dads $$$$ to buy Ben Shermans, etc... I had a lot of the trad gear too, but when I showed up to pick her and her stuff up to move from D.C. to MI I was wearing 14 hole steel toed DMs with red laces, tiger stripe BDU pants and a Combat 84 t-shirt. You should have seen the looks! I could only have made it worse by wearing my buddy's No Remorse t-shirt but didn't want to offend the then-future wife. The haircut never put the zap on my wife's brain, but it did on her sister, she's still crazy. As far as I am concerned, SHARP is worse than the boneheads and should be eradicated. Sorry to hear about your friend. I love Patriot!!!

Almost got to see Patriot at the Oi! Fest up in Atlanta back in '96 (or 97) I think! They kept having problems, on where they were playing! And then they had a small power outage. After waiting around for an hour or two I left.
Atlanta had a pretty cool skin scene, we would travel up there alot for show's. Seen the Anti-Heros ton's of times..... I really did'nt care for the Ska that much, mostly Oi! and Hardcore, but there where some Ska bands that where my favorites. Saw the Hep-cats here in G'ville and then followed them up to Atl. A room mate of mine played drums in a ska band called 'The Usuals' they opened for the Hep-cat's Also seen 'The Business' lot's of boneheads at that show! They played a really quick set, as the boneheads went on the rampage! Go figure, this was in Tampa in Ybor city...... I've seen my fare share of Oi!, Ska and Hardcore shows! But.... Like you said Jack.... All good thing's! I too find myself now listing to more of the music I was raised on, Country! But every now and then there will always be some hardcore, ska and Oi! in my Cd player! |

Anybody goin to the Beer Olympics in ATL this year? I hear form a very reliable source that Mark is fed up and this WILL be the last. It's in August I believe.
My band "the Jumpstarts" was a Skinhead Ska band when I was in it for all of a year. Non-Skin bandmembers felt we were "narrowing our audience too much". Wankers. We opened for Hepcat, the Pietasters, the Toasters, Dance Hall Crashers, Eek A Mouse, The Skunks, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and the Skatalites. We did a medley of "Skinhead" by Laurel Aitken, and "Skinhead Girl" & "Skinhead Moonstomp" by Simaryp. Always brought the house down. Even the "I hate Ska" guys would go nuts. It was a different time. You know, people old enough to drink, or even vote, hell even drive, used to go to Ska shows back then. Now theres not any bands worth seeing. Even I call it Skgay now. SHARP-Shit Heads Against Real People. |
