Is "picatinny" the same as "Weaver style"?

[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Is "picatinny" the same as "Weaver style"?

I am thinking of purchasing the following rail to install on my Mossberg 590...

The optics I am thinking of mounting on that rail state that they come with "Weaver style rings"... Will those mount on a picatinny base? Are they the same size?

they are close.
and in this case close is good enough

all the "weaver" stuff i have used on a picatinny has worked fine, but picatinny stuff wont nessesarily work on a weaver rail. weaver stuff usually just clamps on to the rail, but picatinny secures on with the cross screws.

or so go my observations

Picatinny rings will not fit in weaver rails but
weaver rings will fit in picatinny rails.
