Serious question, guys.  

Canada was once a rough land that took rough men to explore and settle.  They were a self-sufficient bunch that, armed with their trusty firearms, went where "no man had gone before' and carved out a life for themselves.

Now the country seems to be more liberal than California.  They are deathly afraid of firearms and seem to be ready to give up any right to the government.

I once was in Washington state for business and decided to drive up into Canada.  When we got to the border, the Canadian border guy asks if I have any firearms with me.  I answer truthfully, "No".

He then asks some more questions and repeats the question about firearms.  Then he asks where I'm from.  I say, "Texas."

He points to a parking area and says, "Park over there."  They then proceed to get all our luggage out and go through all of it, obviously disappointed that these wild Texans didn't have an illegal firearm.  I couldn't hardly wait to return to a free country.

Anyone have any idea why these people have become so gutless and liberal?

From what I've seen from Canadians, they seem to like firearms as much as we do and hate the central government in Ottawa. Last September when I was in Newfoundland, I would read about how Newfoundland was talking of seceding from Canada since the government had squandered the oil money from the province.

Also provinces are speaking out against the gun registration. It just seems to be liberals in Ottawa causing all the trouble.

"Liberals causing problems".....now that's one thing that seems to be true wherever there are large concentrations of them.

Same reasons Americans have. Canadians are closer to Europeans in culture, they folded faster than us. We are not all that far behind.....

I had the same thing happen last fall, the only time I've ever driven to Canada.  It was on the East side, on the way up to Montreal.  The guard asked my citizenship and I gave her my ID.  She took a little time playing with the computer.  Then she asked if I knew it was illegal to bring firearms into Canada.  I got a little nervous, thinking that they might have some sort of scanners working on the vehicles, and maybe I forgot a box of ammo in the trunk or something.  

They had me pull around to get searched, and they seemed to have a very specific idea of what they were looking for; they thoroughly searched the right rear quarter of the vehicle (trunk & back seat), ignoring the rest.  Of course, there was nothing to find, but it makes me wonder what they were looking for and why.

The whole experience made me feel very unsafe in Canada.  Everybody told me that Montreal was a very safe city, unless you were in the wrong part of town.  Personally, I don't care about the odds of a violent encounter; it's the stakes that matter.

I went to Nova Scotia on my Harley summer before last.

The Canadian Customs dude asked me if I had any firearms I answered truthfully "no".

He then asked if I had "any means of self defense".  Now this question really took me aback.  How was I supposed to answer?

The responses than ran through my mind in that nano second ranged from:

1. Why?  Would it be against the Canadian Criminal protection act to have a means of self defense?

2. Of course I have a means of self defense, I'm an American and therefore will kick the pansy ass of any Canadian that screws with me.

3.  Yes, we are as well prepared to defend ourselves as I felt I could be and get away with it.  I have a Benchmade AFCK in my right front pocket, a Kuboton on my key ring hanging from my belt, and my wife has a can of pepperspray on her key ring.  I would feel much better about riding through you're econmically depressed country leaving behind liberal amounts of much needed revenue, if I could carry my Glock.

The answer I gave was No, I have no means of defending myself (while thinking about #3).  

I did snidely indicate my full faith and confidence in the Mounties to defend my person should the need arise.

Well, the Canadians HAVE been screwing up the works by registering soldering irons and Black and Decker drills.  And one province at a time, they are refusing to enforce the registration laws (but have not yet gone to the ultimate, protecting their citizens from the federal government).  The nice law abiding Canadians are bucking their antigun laws.  So, what do you suppose would happen here?
