You know, the razor type thing, with a 20-40cc engine on the back.

I just moved off campus and am very close to campus.  I would like one of these things to commute because then I don't have to buy a parking permit.

Please tell me what you guys know about these things and what to stay away from.

Be damn SURE you can find a place that will service it when it breaks. Don't go by what the people that are selling the thing says. A lot of them are made in China and there is little or no support for them. There are some made with Tanaka, Echo, or Xenoah engines. For these at least, there are repair parts for the ENGINE!!! Should you need running gear, you're on your own.

Just get a moped type scooter.  Its much more functional and safer.  Not to mention faster and more reliable.  You can pick on up for less then $1000.  Some of the little scooters can cost $300-500 so it would double your cost but would be worth it.  The only problem is storage and helmets.

Check the laws in your area. Philadelphia is trying to make you have a license and pay insurence on them now.

You could just use a bicycle.

But, if you want a scooter...
Some have direct drive, that is a roller than presses up against the rear wheel. Some have chain or belt drive which I would think would be more efficient. Most have 2 cycle engines and are kind of noisy.

Some of the razor type scooters have seats and some have just decks on them. I saw one some where that was both electric and gas powered. It would charge the battery when running on gas. That looked like a good idea when tooling around on campus. Electric when around people, gas out on the street.

Others look more like moped type scooters than foot powered scooters.

I was going to buy one but then found an old Honda Spree moped for $100 at a garage sale. I cleaned out the carburator and it fired right up.

Do a internet or ebay search for mopeds/scooters and you will find out more than you wanted to know.
