I've always shot 9mm and was feeling that my manhood was inadequate for not owning and shooting a .45. after hearing alot of people on these and other boards. Well I went out and purchased an HK USP .45 today. What a pussycat. Recoil was hardly any worse than a 9mm. It shot quite accurate and was a real pleasure to shoot but not as feirsome as some would lead you to believe. Maybe it's just HK's engineering that tames the beast.

I don't know who told you it is big and scary, but that is not the case. It is purely individual. Some people think a .308 has a lot of recoil, some are not bothered by a .300 magnum. A .45 in a full-size is not bad at all. You get into some of the smaller pistols such as the Kimber ultra carry, that is not bad with lighter loads but when you shoot full house loads it can get bothersome. Good luck with your new USP.

Congrats on your new gun.
As for recoil in a handgun, I think it's mostly myth.
I've never shot anything heavier than a 44mag, but even a 200grn jacketed bullet, being pushed by a peak load of 28grns of 296 is nothing. Sure your arms come up, but there's no pain involved. It's not like a rifle where the energy is coming back against your shoulder.
The only time I yelped in pain, was one day when I was shooting my 6in 29, with those big gondola grips resting flat on the table, and my hand was pinched between the table and the grips. Ouch! [:O]

I was very impressed with the speed I could double tap the target with precision. The real trick now is to keep it away from my wife. She loves her Beretta 92 Compact custom carry but her eyes lit up when she fired the HK.

I know you have to take anything posted with a grain of salt on the boards but it gets ingrained into you how small and ineffective a 9mm is and how "powerful" the .45 is. I really wanted a 10mm but didn't want a glock.

My H&K Tactical .45 recoils less than my 9mm Browning.
My .45 Norinco 1911 does rip my flesh with wood grips, but with gloves, it is great.

Congrats on your new weapon. You selected one of the best. The USP45 should give you great service and man the accuracy out of the box. By the way you can purchase adjustable sights for the (Meprolight and MMC) and match grade barrels.

Handgun recoil,........Bring it on!

I have shot a lot of handguns from a 22LR to a .44 Mag and as what Crookshanks said, its recoil is not much to be concerned of.

Try shooting a Benelli M1Super90 loaded with those high-brass #4 shot or slugs.

Geez, I first qualified with an M1911A1 when I was 17 years old. I don't know why so many people make the .45ACP out to be some sort of recoil monster. It doesn't even bother me in an Officer's Model or a SIG P245. Must be a lot of effeminate types out there.

I've always liked the recoil of the .45 versus the 9MM. The .45 (Cougar 8045 and P10) feels like a gentle shove where the 9MM is a quick and jerky flip (92FS and Khar P9). I'm ok up to .44 mag but I still flinch when I touch off a .454. I have heard that recoil is more a perception of reality than fact. Shooting a .454 can really twist your perception. Of course, I could just be a wimp.

Wanna go for a hell of a ride? Try the .454 Casull with 300 grain Cor-bons going 1650fps. Makes Dirty Harry look like Woody Allen.

Yeah when those 454's first hit the market I was ready to buy one because I had a Ruger 44 mag before and sold it. I really like those hand canon's! Something came up I needed the money for and ended up not getting one but still looking....

My dad used to tell me how much the 1911's kicked. When I got my Commander and it did not recoil more than my dad's python loaded with .38 spls he was fairly embarrassed. It is all about perception.

.45,,thats nothing...try a Taurus Raging Bull in .454 Cassull. I didnt find it pleasant to shoot. My palm hurt significantly. But as with any gun, it is all personal opinion

Great choice, Its all a personal choice but my two cents is handgun recoil isnt painfull, my wife loves 357. and my 45.I even tried the taurus 454 with cor bond loads and if i could get over my flinch at the BBBOOOOMMM its a pussycat!
