Depends on the time of year.
Pre spawn is Rusty colored worms. Rest of the year here seems to run toward Chartreuse color combo. 7.5 Female on a Chartreuse spinner (taken on 12/7/15)...

the top 5 biggest I've caught were all on plastics, with my biggest by far on a hard jerkbait, but that one was in Mexico so hard to compare.

Cheap wahoo white spinner that i get from academy and modify
Imuse a combo of gold flake, red and white whiskers that i hand wrap and tie off with copper wire. Gold on top,mjust avfew strands, white in middle and botttom with a few reds strands. I use a red finntip marker to color the gills and behind and below the gills. This give the illusion of a very hurt bait fish. I swap the top silfer smooth spinner for a dimpled copper, aprox 3" long. The second is a silver dimpled spinner. I use a fluke of similar color to the whiskers, cut the head off just long enough for the flukes tail to extend 1" past the whiskers. If i get alot of light steikes and no solid hookups, i will add a trailer hook to the primary on the spinner. Its absolutly devastating to bass. My fav tactic is to find a large piece of floating log and set up down up stream from where im an anchored. As it floats towards me imbang the spinner off the log every 1 min, and inbetween cast as far past it and rip the spinner as close to the log as possible. Works every time. Or fing a stump field in water aprox 4-6' deep, cooler days, shallow, warmer days deeper. I bang the lure off one stump at a time while reeling in the spinner at every angle i can past the stump. This has a affect of pissing the fish off and for ing a reaction bite from both tactics. They will hit it day, night, rain ot shine. If its night time, i might add some fresh cut and crushed perch guts to the whiskers and into the belly cut on the fluke. sometimes a 1" green glow stick from ebay. Attached to a 3" piece of braid aprox 6" in front of the lure. I like to attack every sense the fish has. One i perfected these methods and the lure, i have never gone home with out catching numerous big ass bass. |

I like to Texas rig a Senko worm. It works great just dragging it slowly along the bottom of the banks; if they're hungry, those big SOBs will hit them all day long.

Right before the sun goes down, an Ancient Jitterbug, (older than me and I'm 56) cast about 2 feet from land, parallel to it.
Bass bed down in the undercuts, just cast, let J Bug sit a bit. Slow retrieve----BOOM! |

These are all skinny July fish. If I'm targeting big fish, I'm pitching a 3/4 ounce jig with a thick skirt and a fat trailer (usually a Pit Boss or Missle D Bomb) around structure. One of the above came off a lay down that I bumped four times with a spinnerbait before he hit it. |

For late July that's pretty typical (and those are four different fish). Last year I caught 13 bass over seven pounds from July 1st through August 1st. This year I've been on the water four times since July.

VBC, we'll have to disagree on that one! I lived in Dallas and fished at Texoma and Lake Fork in its heyday...great time and caught many bass. I then moved to Houston and started saltwater fishing. There is absolutely no comparison between a big redfish or speckled trout to a bass A 10lb bass is quite a fish and they are caught occasionally. A 10 lb redfish is common and you'll think you're fighting a horse! Love both but salt is better in my opinion.

I'm a sucker for top waters. I find myself drawn to them every time I go to bass pro, it's the start of an addiction I'm certain. Nothing like watching the water erupt early in the morning from a fat hog demolishing it. My property includes a small pond about 30 yards from my house, largest bass I've pulled out was 5 lbs, although I know theRe are bigger. The thing is, I've pulled out several nice crappie as well, it's the damndest thing I've ever seen, not supposed to have large bass and crappie in the same pond! I don't know the names but I have a hula popper and a small rat buzz bait I really like, and so do the fish.
