Seeing the interracial dating thread made me think that when I was growing up many
seemed to stay in their own group; Italians with Italians, Germans with Germans, etc. Even in my own family, if was my generation with my siblings and I that married one that were other than German. For me I grew up around all Blond haired, blue eyed, fair skinned girls so I wound up marrying a woman with dark hair, brown eyes and who could actually get a tan. |

I have noticed Greek friends whose families put a lot of effort into them marrying fellow Greeks. To the extent parents will rent halls and bring their sons and daughters together for meet and greet socializing.
The only exception is they will grudgingly allow a Greek to marry an Italian, but prefer to keep the bloodline pure. |

Father: Olive skin, black hair. 100% Italian
Mother: Fair skin, blond hair. 50/50 Czech/Polish I'm an ItaloCzechPole-American. |

I don't know, to me there are only two races, black and everyone else. I'm mixed race myself (half Japanese) with slightly darker, more fine golden-hued skin and have dated girls of every race but Indian (damn, neither casino nor help desk!) but never really noticed race except for black. Now cultural differences I notice!

I'm a mutt descended from Irish slaves and German scoundrels that escaped the Prussian reunification.
Probably some other stuff mixed in there, as you know mutts will hump anything. |

But again, it's cultural affinity, not "bloodline." Greeks put a lot of emphasis on their culture. They're indoctrinated to believe that it's the best in the world, and they actually feel sorry for people that don't share it. The irony is that the Greek-American culture is like an artifact preserved in amber. It represents the values of the immigrant ancestors -- people that came to America in the early years of the 20th century -- and is far removed from the reality of Greece today. Greek-Americans who travel to Greece for the first time are often shocked to see how "American" Greece has become. The Greek-American culture revolves around the church and ethnic cooking and dancing. Most third-generation Greek-Americans don't speak Greek anymore, whereas half of the Greeks (in Greece) are fluent in English. |

My family is all white. Without sounding like a liberal. I don't care about color.

I'm confused at this thread.
Is this where we all race (pun intended) to prove how unrascist we are? Or is this a thread where you post how you really feel and then get called an 88er? |

My dad's girlfriend is biracial. Other than that all white in my family.

Spanish, Apache, Ulster Scot, German, Jew mutt here.
A very strange combination with just about everyone being outside my race/ethnicity. |

Meh, we're mutts and have never really been terribly concerned with such things. I know that I'm largely German with some English, Dutch, Irish and Jewish blood mixed in there. Percentages unclear.
It seems to me that the only white people I know who are obsessed (regularly make mention of it and apply it to their lives in any real way) with their genetics are Greeks and Italians. I'm sure there are others, but that's what I notice. I guess it's a matter of pride, but to each his own. AFAIAC if one of my boys meets a nice black/Latino/whatever girl and wants to marry her, more power to them. I'm a bit more concerned with their morals/ethics and worldview than I am what part of the world their ancestors came from. |

hmmmmm where is Clayton Bigsbey when you need him?
White for the win. |

Race is all but irrelevant. The only thing that is important about race, is the race-hatred towards a person felt by and expressed by ignorant bigots.
Culture is EVERYTHING. A classy, cultured martian is still classy. Martian trailer trash is still trailer trash. It isn't the race that's that's important. By the way, Italian, Greek, German, etc,... that's not racial identity, it's national identity and/or cultural identity. Culture is everything! |

This may be beyond the pale, but I dated an Irish broad once.

I'm mostly of British heritage with some native American. I've never been that concerned about race. My wife is Asian and gave birth to our white daughter so race is something we think about in so far as the odd questions we get but we don't let it concern us.
|

No one really knows what RACE they are until they check their DNA.
Everyone I know who had their DNA checked was surprised by the results! |

I was told in the 70's that I was from Mars and the wife was from Venus, so I am not sure what my boys are but I hope they are not from Uranus

English descended and Protestant.
Catholics, Irish, and Jews were considered 'different'. They weren't like us. One family member married a Jewess (is that the right term?) and the pastors in our family all refused to do the wedding. It took many years before people got over it. Still some issues when their kids mock Christianity openly. I've dated outside my social group but I'm not sure it's wise to marry outside of it. |

My family is all white European. German, Norwegian, Irish and British.
My wife's family is Swedish and Puerto Rican. |
|
Mostly German and Welch in my ancestors, my son's dating a redhead though so there went the neighborhood.

My late mother in law's house was like the UN during the holidays. She and her seven kids were white/American Indian, mostly, but they went out and married the world. Indians, blacks, Colombians, Arabs, Koreans, it was an amazing mix of people.

Not really sure.
I grew up in RI, where many folks were first generation Americans and often lived in neighborhoods of people with a similar ethnicity. They still spoke their native tongues. Hell, I went to school in a town where French was routinely spoken on the street. No one was white where I grew up. You were Italian, Irish, French Canadian, or Portuguese. Those seemed to be the dominant ethnicities in the working class part of the state I was from. Almost everyone was Catholic, except for a small Jewish community that was fairly insular. And each group celebrated their culture and looked down a bit on the other groups. Human nature I suppose. I was like many of my friends - half of one of those two, having had parents that were the first to cross those ethnic lines. Might not seem like a big deal now, but it was at the time. So being Irish, French Canadian, and Catholic was essentially my identity. I dated a Portuguese girl for a couple of years and that was clearly interracial for people in both of our families. I doubt it would be considered that now. I ended up marrying someone who was half Asian. I suppose that was interracial, but neither one of us thought of it that way. Someone once commented that on the street where we lived, half of the six houses were interracial marriages. We could only think of two until they pointed out we were the third. The concept of race and ethnicity has changed in my life. It's no longer a simple statement of who you are and a personal family history to remember and perhaps celebrate. It's no longer a community with a shared experience and common interests. It's now used as a bludgeon. It's the third rail. It's a tool used by a vocal minority, often for exploitative purposes. And for many, they are no longer German or Italian. They are white...and should feel guilty about it. It's sad. |
