My hard drive was partitioned at the factory to C: Drive = 12g and D: Drive = 68g but now my C drive is getting full. I'm running WIndows XP Professional and would like to put my programs on C with data on D (does anybody do that anymore? so you can back up data only?) Suggestions? I really don't want to repartition the drive and have to reload everything if there's another way. Thanks[thinking]

Are you using all that data regularly?  It may not be a bad idea to go though your install files, zip files, and whatnot, and burn some of it to CD.

Movies, Downloaded installation files, zip files, backups, etc. are sometimes better kept on CDs.

I have mixed feelings about Partition Magic.  More than likely it will work very well for your situation.  However, you should note that there is a very real possibility that Partition Magic may not be able to read the partition table after it modifies it.

How do I know?  Happened to me very recently.  I will admit my partition table on my main HD is fairly complex (around 8 different partitions for multiple OSes), yet after I used Partition Magic to change the size of a few partitions, I found that Partition Magic would only read the partition table as errored.  Everything still worked, and the changes I made in Partition Magic had taken place, but I could no longer use the program to make any more changes.

To futher see what the problem was I used the fdisk program from a Red Hat Linux installation to see what was up.  Ends up what happened is that Partition Magic had put a little space (<1 kilobyte) between each of my partitions.

Does it do this all the time?  I don't know, but it did it to me and caused me enough headaches that I backed up and reformated everything.

I'm not trying to tell you Partition Magic is crap only my particular experience with it.  I consider myself to be very computer savy, so I am pretty sure it wasn't user error.  Either way g'luck with it.

Open up the Windows Search utility and type in *.tmp, *.bak, *.old and delete any files that pop up, that may give some of it back depending on how long it's been.

Make sure and defrag to keep your HDD happy [:D]

Can't you just change the size of the partitions you already have? Resize the ones you already have-I'm not sure how to do it in XP though.

Ditto on the new hard disk. My high school children built their own computer from components, they are now they are out of HD space, they are set to get a 120G for a really cheap price, something like $100US.

I've had good luck with System Commander, which also provides a partitioning utility. At one time, I had Win98, 2000, and Redhat running on the same drive and had no problems at all. It resizes partitions with ease and never killed the drive. Resizing can be slow, but if that's what you need, it's worth the wait.

On your OS drive?  Guess I've been brainwashed from fixing too many servers.

You can do a couple of other things. The hard way is to find where those programs are pointing in your registry and "move" them to the d drive.
The sort of easy way is to reinstall on the current os and point them to d when they install and then copy/move all the files to the new directories they created on d so all your storage will be there instead.

Get Partition Magic and merge the partitions.

No point in having them separate, especially if you are running NTFS
