Actually, it was a pretty good start... an M44 with a couple thousand each of russian surplus FMJ and Wolf SP's (for taking game as necessary).  Max investment for rifle and ammo: 300.

Good .22 rifle for small game/pest control, with inexpensive scope, and 5.5 metric assloads of every .22lr ammo available.  Max investment for rifle, ammo and scope: 300.  Edit:  Throw on a cheap but sturdy scope like a Russian milsurp, or a 4x shotgun scope from walmart, etc... for maybe another $75 tops.

Eastern European surplus pistol (Makarov, PA63, etc..) for defensive needs.  Several mags, cheap holster, 2 or 3 cases of 9x18 Russian HP's.  Max investment for pistol, mags, ammo and holster: 250.

Since we're talking about survival here, there's a good chunk of change left over for MRE's, camping needs, etc...

I would use the money to take out a full page ad calling up all loyal americans to encourage the president to keep his campaign promise of reasonable and common sense gun control.

Why an M44?
Why not get an SVD shipped(smuggled) from Iraq?
You can get an SVD and a few thousand rounds of 7.62x54r ammo(military stuff too) there for less that $200, much less.

Itll make taking care of the guys in blue helmets easier too
