Looks like Toyota is planning to compete in the XTerra niche. I like the XTerra and was considering either that or a Tacoma, but I really wanted a Toyota. I was planning to buy a Tacoma in the spring of next year, but may hold off and wait for this. I never owned a FJ40 (got to drive one for a while, though), but I did have a FJ80. It looks like a smaller semi-rounded out H2. looks like it would be usless.

wow, i have been waiting for them to visit the old landcruiser a la fj40, surprised they ever stopped (at least in this country), what with the popularity of jeeps, etc. so i appreciate what they are doing here. however, i think they are trying to hard to cater to the 'youth market' that they keep mentioning in the article here, looks like the interior was designed by nintendo...

I guess you guys are just too old, I kinda like it. I think it would look nice in a flat OD green, but I'd settle for glossy black.

BUY THE TACOMA ! Proven and reliable. Get the V6 powerplant, though.Careful with these new concept vehicles, takes years to work out the flaws.[8D]

Buy the Tacoma, but wait a bit longer.
They should be putting the new 4Runner V6 in the 04 Tacoma models.

That's what I'm waiting for.

I like it. If it comes in a hunter green color I would take one.

It has a large amount of ground clearence (which like other Toyota models) makes it kick ass off-road.

Cool. I have a landcruiser, huntergreen with tan leather interior. I love it. I think they live forever.

I've four wheeled since 1978, driven military Hummers since they were first fielded, and owned many 4x4 Toyotas since 1985. All of which went offroad frequently. Toyota builds very capable and reliable machinery. Even the soccer mom 4Runner has good genes underneath. 80% of them will never see a day off-road, but Toyota make a very capable platform and does their homework. I would suspect they'll test it on the Rubicon as Nissan did with the Pathfinder if producton is planned. I hope Nintendo dash wouldn't make it into production and as wolfpack mentions, 31s are likely, but 33s may be an option. The front and rear winches are a nice touch. It'll looks like it will smoke the H2 Hummer, but not sure about an H1 in capable hands.

I really wish toyota would import their real pickups here, none of this tundra and tacoma nonsense with the ridiculous race motors they put in them. This is what the project I worked on in Africa had. It had an inline 6-cyl diesel, twin tanks, a snorkel and front and rear lockers. It kicked ass.

Hey duarte,

I drive a Diesel Toyota truck like that out at the mine.

It has rolled over the odometer driving underground, where 2 low is driving just as fast as you can without breaking things.

Wish I could buy something like that. Very simple, bolted together, and without all the plastic trim screwed on the side to make it look rugged.

The old FJ40 was a great offroader! - But it had the worst breaks on the planet... I was told that it was pulled from the US line due to the number of lawsuits based on breaking issues.

Not sure how many miles we put on it - the Odometer was broken, but we went through 3 clutch sets before it got T-boned by an idiot who ran a red light doing alomst 50mph.
