When ever I watch a VCD or SVCD encoded video the current codec I have has a box made up of 9 little squares that moves all around the screen |

VCD doesn't need a special codec if you are using msft media player. SVCD needs an mpeg-2 codec. To open a vcd in media player:FILE>>OPEN(make sure to select all files(*.*) for FILES OF TYPE). Browse to MPEGAV folder on vcd. select *.dat file and it should play.

Oh yeah, forgot to add that you can also play SVCD with software DVD players like Power DVD.
