I went to the indy 500 today, and a despute broke out over wether the cars had "neutral", then the descussion turned to do they have reverse.

Can anyone shed some light on this and settle the debate?

If memory serves me correctly, Indy cars have two types of transmissions used, depending on the type of course.

6 speed with no reverse gear for ovals and 5 speed with reverse for road courses.

They ALL have neutral.  In-Out boxes are limited to sprint cars.  Even many of those now have starters and clutches.  Anything that makes pit stops needs a clutch.

Nope, no reverse, for oval or road race. No onboard starters either.

Push in the clutch and turn wheel hard.  If you time things right, you go in reverse....
