What's that thing midway out on the barrel? Looks like an expansion chamber or something?

I used to know (honest!) but then somebody asked me, and by brain cramped up.

Bore evacuator -

it keeps nasty gasses out of the crew compartment.

Artillery pieces have them too - the shape and location of these things are a key identification feature.

Yep. And if you're quick, you can look into the tube as it goes back into battery after the breech locks open, and see the last of the fumes getting sucked up into it.
