Gents,

I'm turning to ARFCOM for help.

I pulled some salmon out of the freezer this morning for dinner tonight; upon unwrapping it after it had thawed I notcied this label, and it smells "fishier" than normal.

The groceries are purchased/delivered via Instacart, so I have no knowledge of what took place when it was packaged/purchased in the store. That said, it's supposed to be about 1.25lbs of wild Atlantic Salmon.

Would you cook it or not?

The salmon was cut into 4 strips, about 4 inches long and an inch wide; I had two, wife had the other two.

First one tasted great; I could not make it through the second one. I love Salmon, but this was some fishy shit. I gave it to the dog.

Wife only ate one as well.

I pooped about 30 seconds after putting my plate away; unsure if related.

Now trying to emergency thaw some 93/7 to cook up some burgers as a replacement.

If it has been frozen since you purchased it then it won't kill you.

It may not taste very good, but it's not gonna kill you.

This. Any meat I have that even remotely smells off, I just cook and feed to my dogs.

Honestly, I think it will be just fine - I've plenty of two year old fish that I've caught and then put in the freezer.

4 yr old fish?

Yeah sure. Have discovered Steelhead and Salmon in the freezer that was older, and if it isn't freezer burnt, turns out fine.
Of course we catch, clean, pack and freeze it ourselves, but if you trust the packer and retailer, go for it.

my parents freeze fish and keep it for ages, but they freeze it in solid blocks of ice. no air touches it. defrosting is a bitch but we end up frying it and it's always fine. some of it is a few years old by the time it gets cooked.

If it smells off, it's not wise to eat it.

I bought a piece of sockeye a couple days ago, the person at the fish counter at Safeway looked at me strangely when I said, "lay it on a piece of paper and let me smell it".

It passed, and turned into a pecan crusted salmon dinner.

Fastest way to thaw that 93/7 is in a bowl with running cool tap water, keeps the water temp steady without getting it into the danger zone.
