I bought some "Damp-rid" at the hardware store. Has anyone tried using this stuff before?
I use a "Goldenrod"  in my big safe but I was going to try this in a handgun safe the size of a shoebox. It says its "Calcium chloride" and is white pellets in a 5 inch high plastic bucket. The directions say that the pellets absorb the moisture in the air than drip down into the botton of the bucket then drained. I'm assuming this would take quite a while even in humid summer months in MN. The hardware guy said people use it to dry out entire rooms so if I use it could it hurt to put the whole thing in that small safe? It also says on directions not to let the stuff contact metal. Thanks.

I just started using Damp-Rid this past Febuary, there is about an inch of water the bucket. Since I don't have any room for a rifle safe, my rifles are in a closet and so is the Damp-Rid.
My friend in Florida swears by the stuff. He used to have a mold/mildew smell in his condo, but after using Damp-Rid, it has eliminited the smells.
But, I would definitly be careful NOT to let the moist pellets or water touch your handguns. Be careful when moving the safe around to prevent spilling. It should be fine in a small safe. Good luck.

Don't use it.  I do not recommend putting any salt in an enclosed enviornment with firearms or any steel object.  My recommendation is to go to a mailing company and buy dessicant packs.  Mail Boxes Etc. should have those for sale.  (I used to get mine from a photo supply)  since I don't leave my guns in an enviornment where humidity is a problem, I don't need them any more.

Calcium chloride is very caustic stuff. I wouldn't want it anywhere around my firearms.
