Seven bullets recovered in East Texas deputy's shooting

Seven bullets fired through an East Texas lawman's vehicle have been
recovered as the investigation continues into his fatal shooting.

Anderson County sheriff's officers said Monday more clues were sought in
the slaying of Deputy Shelby Green. He was found early Thursday, slumped
against the open door of his unmarked patrol car, by a fellow deputy. Green
had been shot in the chest.

Green, 39, was on his way to back up another officer on a domestic
disturbance call when he noticed a suspicious vehicle at a Bradford area
store where he thought a burglary might be taking place, an investigator
said earlier.

Chief Deputy Mike Link said Green's weapon was found about 10 to 12 feet
below Catfish Creek Bridge on Farm-to-Market Road 2961, along the waterway.
Authorities have said Green's weapon had been fired multiple times.

Sheriff's investigator Chuck Franklin said authorities still have no
suspects in the case.

"The investigation is ongoing," he told the Palestine Herald-Press in
Tuesday's online edition, "and we're continuing to beat the bushes to find
out who might have been involved in this."

Minutes before his death, Green radioed that he was involved in a pursuit
between Bradford and Cayuga. The veteran lawman described the vehicle as a
silver-colored pickup, possibly a Chevrolet.

Green's vehicle, recovered in the remote area of northwestern Anderson
County on the northern boundary of Gus A. Engeling Wildlife Management
Area, had six bullet holes through the front windshield and another through
the driver's side window.

Franklin said the recovered bullets will be sent to the Texas Department of
Public Safety laboratory in Tyler for analysis.

Green, who began as a part-time dispatcher with the sheriff's department,
was a 10-year veteran. He received an award last year from the Drug
Enforcement Administration.
