The orginal that is, you know, the good one.
Anyways, I saw something that I thought really summed up my feelings about firearms.

Right after the apes break Taylor out of the slammer Cornelius and he have this exchange---

Taylor: "Do you have any weapons? Any guns?"

Cornelius: "Of Course, the best, but we wont need them"

Taylor: "Glad to hear it, But I want one anyways"

Just thought I'd post it here, since I dont know anyone that would think that line was neat, laughs.
Anyone else remember it?

Those chimps were pretty liberal.  That's what made them so naive.  Or is it the other way around?  That's an interesting cause and effect question!

That doesnt take  much smarts though, does it? ;)

The movie made some neat social commentary. I think most of us can agree on that. But the biggest mystery to me is, did the apes reload all that ammo, or did they just find a cache of left overs..hmmmm

They must have forges and facilities to produce things, because the movie takes place a couple thousand years in the future IIRC.

Regarding not requiring weapons, their law states ape shall not kill ape, so Cornelius feels he has nothing to fear.  Where they were going is also in the forbidden zone, and the general populace avoids it like the plague.

Ahhhh, I see.  The chimps were suffering from the elitist liberal mindset!  Like some folks in Congress!

Off-topic a little bit here, but I always liked those carbines the apes carried. What do they remind you of in modern firearms terms? I think the 10/22 International or the Enfield .303...

I always got the sense they were more like M1 Carbines.

Oh, and ditto to what Taylor (My Man Chuck!) said...

Maybe they were using Hi-point carbines?

You realize what an ultimate fantasy ending that movie has?

Charlton Heston is a guy who has:
1. A weapon & ammo
2. Plenty of evil apes to shoot at
3. A good looking woman who can't talk

Who can ask for more than that??

Those guns were actually M1 carbines dressed up with the butthole stocks.  Predictions of things to come.

The rifles were M1 carbines, the subguns were Madsen M50's (I think, the mag was straight, right?) Don't recall any pistols used by the apes in the movies.

Butthole, or Thumbhole? Of course, for some people that may be the same thing.

I had an SKS paratrooper (took AK mags, crude butthole stock) and my brother called it the "damn dirty ape rifle."  He still loved shooting it, probably because he didn't have to clean it.  I would tell him, "get your filthy hands off my damn dirty ape rifle!"

The stock looked like a 7th grade woodshop project, and the cosmoline/ varnish combination made the stock sticky feeling for the first 6 years I owned it.

"Planet of the Apes, Beneath the"
20th Century Fox, 1969
This rifle consists of a working World War II carbine encased in a brown-painted metal shell. It was utilized by 'gorillas' in the training sequence of the film as well as the invasion of the 'mutant' liar. It was most notably used by James Franciscus as 'Brent' in the climax of the film to kill 'General Ursus'. It can be distinguished from other 'Ape' rifles in that it has the highly sought after bayonet. Of the three known to exist, this is the one with most of the wood-grain-style paint still in tact and the only one with the working rifle still inside.
