I prefer it, given the option Ill take the wide screen version. You get to see more at the edges of the screen. Just imagine if the video from The Ring was in wide screen, she wouldnt have had to stretch the screen lol.

shouldn't show if your HDTV is 16:9 aspect ratio, right?

Depends on the aspect ratio. A 1.85:1 movie fills the wide screen. A normal tv is 1.33:1. Many movies, especially action ones, are 2.35:1 so will have the black bars on both. Doesn't bother me, especially since I usually watch movies at night with the lights off so you can't see them anyhow. Widescreen is still the only way to watch a movie though, I freakin hate watching movies in "full screen".

If you have a 16:9 tv then a 1.85:1 movie will fill the screen and a 2.35:1 will have bars no matter what. It's simple math. If you multiply 1.85:1 * 9 you get 16.65:9 where as with a 2.35:1 *9 you get 21.15:9 If you want the technical reason. Spiderman fits, Star Wars II doesn't. |

Most movies are the 1.85:1, but a handfull of the BIG block busters are still in 2.35:1 format, such as Star Wars. I guess Ben Hurr was the widest movie ever made at something like 2.67:1? That's almost panoramic. As long as your getting the whole image, I wouldn't worry about the little black bars. Now, if you have the 16X9 compression, then you will notice the bars even less, as there is no energy put forth in that area of the screen. |

hmm wide screen = the whole picture
pan and scan = chopped to fit my screen once i got used to wide screen, never ever bought another pan and scan movie again. wide screen on a enhanced TV is the best. |

Only in that example. Pan & Scan (how they correct the chopping effect) is the most annoying "feature" that has ever been invented. If you have action (or anything semi-important) happening on both extremes of the original movie screen, you have to pan over to each. VERY distracting. Letterboxed (or wide format) is how it was shot, and how it was intended to be viewed. |
