I did read that after he left Floyd he'd just show up at the studio randomly and then sneak out when no one was paying attention without saying anything. The real creative ones always end up crazy.

Old Syd was a nutter, but his stuff is awesome.

They did not "write him off" at all.

Syd's story is tragic. He had "friends" that were very bad for him. People who thought it was hilarious to dose his tea and food and everything else with LSD without him knowing. There were periods where for weeks he was constantly tripping. And he wasn't doing it to himself.

This tended to make him unreliable as a band member. Floyd was trying to establish themselves and make something of the band.

Syd was not without fault, Waters and all of them tried to get him away from those "friends". Syd wouldn't hear of it.

But to say they wrote him off is not correct. They moved on with the band and replaced him. That had to happen. But they certainly cared about him and took care of him. They paid him a share for the rest of his life. They loved the guy.

DSOTM and WYWH are both clearly about Syd and very beautiful.

I read a good article on him a few months ago. Dude had some serious internal issues. Doesn't change the fact he was a very talented musician.

Barrett used acid often, but there was one particular weekend where the band members say he went awol from an important recording session, and when someone was finally able to track him down the following week, it was as if somebody had turned off a light switch in his mind - "fried his brain" was the wording I recall in the interview. He was never the same after that. Years later, he was still unable to record anything that was even remotely usable.
