Our home computer has been operating great for years now and it made me wonder if even computers that are working fine are infected somehow by anything a person wouldn't know of because the PC isn't being obviously changed in any way but should still be dealt with. My wife insisted on installing Norton a long time ago and it sure seems to do it's job well.

Not nearly enough.   I was thinking more on the line of financial information thieves and such. The way it sounds nobody is safe and it worries me.

It depends what the virus or whatever was designed to do.  Not all of them are made to just wreck your shit.  Some are made to steal your data, record your keystrokes to steal passwords, or to just use your PC as part of a huge network of bots to do something they want to do.  And of course, some are just made by assholes who just want to trash peoples shit.

But yes, you can be infected and be completely oblivious to it.  AV software can't detect everything as there is a steady stream of new shit being made all the time.

I don't think the NSA is a threat to get and use my credit card info.

I do a lot of purchases on line, ebay and a bunch of motorcycle parts places. I figured if you use the web a lot for buying stuff the chances of getting screwed were probably bigger. I haven't had a card compromised for about 5 years and I worry about these things.
