They actually used to carry G3s and currently carry M4s while on guard duty, that picture was from a military tattoo in Australia so they probably did it to be less threatening looking or something.

My Grandfather had a pet monkey while he was serving at the Brooklyn Naval Yard in WWI. As tailors, they even made the monkey a bluejacket to wear around.

I'd give anything for a picture of it.
