All 10 Sears stores and nearly all the Kmart stores will close in late July. Two Kmart stores will close in mid-September.

Good riddance.  Sears has been managed like a big, dumb animal for decades.  It's time for them to hang it up.

No shit. Every time I see one, it's having a going out of business sale. Been that way for years. But it never seems to actually go out of business.

Cody has a Kmart.  Parking lot is always mostly empty.  Wal-Mart is jammed at all hours.

Kmart near me is old as hell, run down.  Mostly old people and minorities that shop there. I guess they've spent enough to keep it going.

Doesn't K-Mart own Sears?

Kmart we shop at from time to time is directly across from a supercenter.
Supercenter is always packed, kmart always dead but no surprise they close the store at 8pm every day but sunday and 6pm that day.
Like hitting kmart after hunting season is over when they clearance stuff out. Always get a couple pairs of mitten/gloves for a couple bucks or zip up hoodies for 7 bucks or so. Insulated underwear for a couple dollars, etc.

There used to be a Sears store in my neck of the burbs, and it was tools and hardware and yardware only.

That's what they should do with ALL Sears stores. Get rid of all the cheap jewelry, FSA clothing, electronics, kitchenware, etc.

Sears bought out, then ass raped to death Western Auto back in 1994. And they have been failing ever since. I hope they suffer a miserable death!

K Mart and Sears have both been going down the toilet for years and years now.  They closed the Sears nearest to me 18 months ago.

The one Mom works at is closing in July. The key to what has kept stores opened this long is year around layaway.

I like Sears and K-Mart, pay about 5% above Walmart, no waiting to check out, no pain in the ass to park. Walmart is a fuckin nightmare to fight crowds and then check out. I know I am in the minority here.

I was at the kmart near me about 2 weeks ago. Got some weatherstripping and hand heaters that were on clearance.

There were very few other customers in the store. I have no idea how they make enough money to keep the lights on.

Last time I bought something at a K-Mart, I was in it b/c it was closing and i was looking for deals.

Got some fishing gear at a decent price, but some stuff's closeout prices were just starting to match amazon prices.

Except for craftsman tools, those were all shipped to other stores

Our local Kmart just closed this month, it had been clearancing off stuff for the last month or two.  In a brilliant marketing move, the store went in and marked everything up at least 30%, then started selling items off at 10-30% "discount"....and people ate it up.  You should have seen the crap people were buying at marked up prices, thinking they were getting a deal because it was on clearance.  I guess KMart has been studying the Cheaper Than Dirt method of selling stuff....

The cool thing is, if you ever go into another one, it will STILL feel just like 1986.   Same thing with Sears.

It is the other way around. Sears owns K-Mart (under the umbrella of the Sears Holdings Corp.).

No matter. I'm surprised that it has taken this long for the both of them. I expect JC Penney to soon follow suit.

I am pretty sure Walmart decided about 5+ years ago that Kmart and Sears were not serious competition.  Not a huge wallyworld fan, but when I do go there I am impressed with what they sell vs. who they are trying to compete with.  They also have Sams Club which is like Walmart, but for people with jobs.

That's the sad part of the story.  Sears had all the infrastructure in place for a perfect internet business model and they shut it all down and bulldozed all those distribution centers just a couple of years before the internet took off.  If they had foreseen what was coming and built a website version of all their catalogs they would be ahead of Amazon today by a factor of five to ten.

Haven't been in a KMart in several years.  When ours closed, it was always empty.  I only shopped there for bottled water as they had a good deal every couple of weeks.  They closed about three years ago.

Our local Sears closed last year.  It was a hometown store, the owner died and they couldn't find a buyer.  I spent a lot of money there over the years.

That's exactly what I was telling a coworker last week when we were having this conversation. Sears had all the infrastructure for an ass kicking online presence and they flushed it.

I haven't shopped Kmart since they shut down their gun sales back in the early 90's.

Some of them had cafeterias/restaurants and a pinball arcade too.  I also liked the place.  They became K-Mart.

Yea, KMart needs to go but I fear what would end up in it's place.  The Sears is a little better though.
