Grandpa always offered fig newtons when I visited as a kid. He passed away a few days ago. I had forgotten about that, made me smile

My grandfather, a retired dairy farmer, kept cookies in a large metal box in a spare bedroom. I guess he only bought cookies for the grandkids, and since he never ate them he didn't want mice getting into them. I mean this big tin box could fit a small child in there.

Oh and he had big paintings of the Virgin Mary and Jesus with the Sacred Heart, you know where Christ is depicted as having a heart sort of floating in front of Him? My sister said the eyes looked like they followed you around the room, rotten sister that she was. I used to go with mom to visit him and I'd lay in the spare bedroom under that big Jesus painting with the scary eyes and floating heart when I was little. I'd glance up at the eyes, then go back to reading Batman, then quickly glance up at the eyes again to see if they moved.

I ate fig newtons, about 5 at about 10 pm, now it's 4:58am, and I'm going to need a plunger for the toilet. Fat free, but I don't think that matters.

Not a fig newton guy, but sweets with milk in the middle of the night is a habit I acquired in adulthood. It's the only time I eat them.

Pursuant eyes in a picture of Christ are pretty ubiquitous as far as art rendering goes -- even the works a common man would purchase from the old K-mart back in the day. Seems he wanted everyone to know he was watching.
