I was participating in a practice fencing bout and my opponent hit me very hard on the right side of my chest. It left a bruise, and now a few days later the bruise is gone but the area is still very painful. It hurts when I touch the area and it will randomly start hurting. Nothing is out of place and there is not obvious fracture. My question is should I get it looked at? Could the rib be broken or is it more likely bruised?

Seriously, it's probably deep tissue bruising. Take some motrin and force hydrate. That'll fix anything.

Gently, place your nipple between your thumb and trigger finger.

Next, start rolling your nipple between the above finger tips.

Then, increase the speed of the rolling action, and start tugging on your nipple at the same time.

Once your nipple is nice and hard, now attach an alligator clip to it.

Finally, rip the alligator clip off of your nipple as hard as you can.

No point in getting an xray, if it's broken, it's broken. There's nothing to do for it except suck it up.

Take Tylenol for pain, try to avoid getting hit there for the next couple of weeks.

Acute Saberitis. May require an Epee-ectomy. Or possibly a Foil-otomy.

If you are highly motivated, an xray can rule out a fractured rib, but even then, they'll tell you to take it easy until it heals.

Professional answer? It's never wrong to have an actual doc take a look.

Edit: You gonna be at Summer Nationals in Dallas in July?

No. I have been fencing for less than a year, and I have not been able to compete yet. It is my school's club, but we are not NCAA rated yet because the program is less than a year old.

This was practice and the bout ended after that. I did not notice any bruising or pain until the next day. Neither of us noticed the damaged tip until after the hit.

I've never seen a rubber tip on a foil or epee, just the contact switch tip. In any event, deeper bruising to the intercostal muscles between the ribs can hurt like a mofo for a good while, even when nothing is broken. Make sure you can take a good deep breath. If your breathing is shallow to avoid discomfort, you should probably see the doc anyway. It's not uncommon to get pneumonia if your normal inspiration is compromised because of rib pain.

Since our program is so new we are using practice weapons instead of competition weapons since they are cheaper and we do not have to pay for all of the electronics.
