My son found it in the lake, so apparently some sort of aquatic possum. He's slow moving and seemingly quite shy but will occasionally crane his neck around and open his mouth in a somewhat threatening manner. Any guesses?
...and for scale.

Nah, not a snappy. Snappers have tails. A little snapper (granted, 10X the size of OP's) fell into our neighbor's pool. Whiny neighbors asked Dad to fish it out because they was skeerd, and I had a new pet for about a month before Mom made me get rid of it. I fed him chunks of hot dog and crickets I'd catch.
That looks a little like a slider, but I'm not a turtleologist. Try feeding him small insects and bugs. Catch some water bugs or tadpoles, that's probably what he eats at that size. eta: snappy jr (not my pic):

My guess is a common musk or stinkpot. Take a picture of the belly and rear and I can tell you for sure. You planning on keeping it? If so, you'd better get a good UVB bulb to help its early development.

Here you can see the tip of the tail. He keeps it mostly tucked under his leg unless he's on the move, then it's well over half as long as his body.

I had a baby snapper as a kid. Brought him home from fishing and decided to keep him and give him a friend to play with. I put him in the aquarium with Tommy the frog.
Unfortunately Tommy was not armed and lost the vote on what was for dinner. |

We have a lot of Snapping Turtles in my neck of the woods. I don't fuck with them. I don't think we have Alligator Snappers on Central FL.
