My son found it in the lake, so apparently some sort of aquatic possum. He's slow moving and seemingly quite shy but will occasionally crane his neck around and open his mouth in a somewhat threatening manner. Any guesses?

...and for scale.

Nah, not a snappy.  Snappers have tails. A little snapper (granted, 10X the size of OP's) fell into our neighbor's pool.  Whiny neighbors asked Dad to fish it out because they was skeerd, and I had a new pet for about a month before Mom made me get rid of it.  I fed him chunks of hot dog and crickets I'd catch.

That looks a little like a slider, but I'm not a turtleologist.  Try feeding him small insects and bugs.  Catch some water bugs or tadpoles, that's probably what he eats at that size.

My guess is a common musk or stinkpot. Take a picture of the belly and rear and I can tell you for sure. You planning on keeping it?  If so, you'd better get a good UVB bulb to help its early development.

It's not a snapper, they look more like snappers at that age nand the prominent serrations on the rear of the shell aren't to be seen.  I'm gonna go with maybe a redear as this creek running hillbilly's SWAG.

I'd be the first to admit that I don't much about turtles...I always just assume the worst case scenario and work from there.

I hate to be a Negative Nancy here, but is taking wildlife for pets legal in your area, OP?

Yeah, the alligator snapping turtles are fully armored and have long tails as babies, which get shorter and fatter as they get older.

They look like miniaturized versions of the real thing, they're pretty cool. And when they're babies is the only time you're not afraid to mess with them.

I want nothing to do with those things, venomous snakes and spiders, gators, giant hybrid snakes, and all the other assorted nasty critters you got down there.

Nuh-uh. I'm sticking with mountain lions, bears and Samsquatches.

I had a baby snapper as a kid. Brought him home from fishing and decided to keep him and give him a friend to play with. I put him in the aquarium with Tommy the frog.

Unfortunately Tommy was not armed and lost the vote on what was for dinner.
