In the same vein as the other films of the late 70's early 80's that spawned Fort Apache the Bronx, the Death Wish movies, and probably culminated in "Escape from New York". There's a bunch of "Theme Gangs", like the baseball gang, the mime gang, (no, really), the rollerskate gang. And this gang with a more modest theme, "The Warriors" with leather vests, has to fight their way across NYC late at night to get back to their home turf. And a late night female Disco DJ on the radio making commentary on the Warriors progress like it's a big sporting event, or an election. It's minor meme-fodder on the Internet these days.
