My wife and I stayed on Fremont street at the Four Queens when we went. We enjoyed Fremont street more than the strip.

It's okay. I hang out with all the other Hawaiians at the California anytime I go to Vegas. Downtown makes a good base if you don't make your entire trip about the Strip and club life.

I didn't like it.  Casinos looked like something cousin eddy would hang out in.  Lots of weird/ugly/fat/smelly people when I was there.

If you do go take the bus instead of a taxi.   Taxi up there was over thirty bucks.  Bus ride home was 6 or so.

Yes I liked Fremont Street.  Stayed on the Strip but prefer downtown late at night.

You don't like the fat smellies  of Fremont St,  but recommend the bus over a cab.  LOL.

I would recommend staying at the Golden Nugget on Fremont St.    DO NOT go to the Glitter Gulch strip club!!!

If it's your first time in Vegas , go it's worth the trip.

Honestly the entire Vegas strip just seems to get more ghetto every year.

Different world.

Think, 'old school'.

If you're okay with that, you'll enjoy it.

If you're 'into that', you'll love it.

If you need Flaming Volcanos and Cheesy Venetian gondola tours, then stay on the strip.

YMMV.  (check with Hometown forum)

When Insert(s) was open, we preferred to go down Fremont to Fremont East.

That's where the locals hangout.

There is that. Too bad I can't jet off to the French Riviera. That's why I'm happy moking out over a bowl of saimin and playing the slot machines versus the Strip with the hundreds of Discover Card millionaires with their loud mouth spouses.

8-10 years ago the downtown Vegas promoted new Fremont street as a "family" or tamer activity to shed its seedy history.  Some guitar playing or some spray can artists displaying their craft.  After going again last month, it's definitely changed.   Naked woman wearing thongs and pasties, KISS band impersonators in full makeup wearing only cod pieces and lots and lots of people.  Entertaining to people watch, but when you take  pictures they want to get paid a couple of bucks. I was there the same weekend as a NASCAR race and a  UFC fight and the whole city was packed.  The strip was teaming with people at 10:00 AM. Downtown looked like the photo above.

The wife and I stayed at The Golden Nugget a few years ago............first time It was pretty good, last couple of times it was terrible. We usually stay out on the other side of the Strip at Sunset Station, and besides being a better deal, it was close to the Strip and lots of restaurants

It definately wasnt any worse than any other strip club Ive been to.
Ten dollar beers added up quick but since we were drinking like crazy basically for free everywhere else we indulged.

We live an hour outside of Vegas, from time to time we will take a mini vacation for a night or two, and we always choose downtown.  Its cheaper, the machines are loose compared to the strip, and its a lot more welcoming of locals.

We either stay at the 4 Queens, or the El Cortez.  Check out the new container park down there, lots of places to eat inside and neat stuff to see.

The California Hotel, 2nd floor, has a great Hawaiian restaurant, "Aloha Specialties".. still the best Chicken Teriyaki Bowl in the city! The downstairs restaurant has a good New York Strip and Banana Fritter mid-night special too. Would definitely recommend the Golden Nugget if you stay down there, they remodeled their pool not long ago so it's a nice place for being an older casino. They actually do have a real "Golden Nugget" so check that out too. Downtown Grand (formerly Fitzgerald's) is remodeled as well, descent rooms and prices.

Don't forget the zip lines, free light show, and maybe eat the "Heart Attack Grill"? And use Uber, taxi's are expensive and busses take a while.

Don't forget to take pics with the Pirate Chick and the Nuns too

Complains about the sleezy casinos and low class people, but advises you to wait in a sweaty line to board a sweaty bus.  Seems legit.  lulz.

I like downtown for a change of pace when in vegas,

Long time ago they used to deal single deck black jack at the Horseshoe.  Stay at the Golden Nugget and have at least one dinner at Hugo's in the basement of the 4 Queens.

We go to Vegas quite frequently, I'd say we stay on Fremont St about half the time. One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is that depending on the time of the year, you can get upgraded really easily at some of the hotels on Fremont St.

We once got upgraded to this awesome 80's porno suite with the bedroom's entire ceiling covered in mirrors and interesting "furniture" too...

There are some things I don't like about it such as street performers and low life's but honestly the strip has just as many.

If you can ignore that noise then it's an awesome time.  Good gambling, good food, a few of the hotels are actually pretty nice, and all of the above is 50% of the cost of the strip.  If you've never been then it's worth spending a night.

Personally my favorite trips are 2 nights downtown, 3 nights on the strip...and we usually end up cabbing it back downtown at least once more.  Maybe I'm rare but I can appreciate the Wynn on one hand and some aged downtown joint on the other.

Downtown Grand is a great new option near Fremont if you need a strip like pool during the day.  That and Golden Nugget are my go to options downtown.  Golden Nugget is just more crowded.

Watch Diamonds Are Forever and get a idea of older Vegas.
I was lucky enough to have relatives there to stay with so I had it pretty good.
Go to Henderson to gamble it's a lot more fun for less.

Yes....next time I go I was thinking of staying downtown.  Everything is much cheaper from food, booze, cigarettes and table minimums.

This is true....we did it both ways each year we went.  Take the bus for some laughs a few times but it gets tiring with all the stops it makes.

Some of that might be a little less crazy now, the street performers under fremint st experience are now required to get a license and are assigned spots. Of course you may see some tourists attired in such a fashion.

Plus Fremont Street is shaded and virtually air conditioned with the screen over it. It's a lot cooler there than outside Fremont, for sure.

We were there last week and had a good time on Fremont.   It's a little seedy with bums laying on the sidewalk and we saw some junkies cooking up something in the parking garage.  We had beers at Atomic Liquors,  and the storage container park is cool.   There is a giant praying mantis that shoots flames out of it's antennas.   It scared the shit out of a bunch of people.
